I couldn't actually finish it, and that fact alone allows me to rate it so badly. So hard to get into!
We will never know how the fishing story ended. I really wanted to know that.
i wonder why the hype with Jennifer Lawrence , leaving the brilliant work of Amy out...
A great movie, as long as one pays attention. Soundtrack was great. Characters were outstanding.
Anti-climatic? I don't know. I love all the leads in this movie, but the movie itself just falls a little flat for me. Also, being a native New Yorker, the constant slips on the accent drive me crazy!
It's a good film, but for me, no re-play quality. I'm still waffling on my score though...
wanted to watch it for a really long time... i just watched it yesterday, it was horrible... idk the hype.. it's really bad.
Filthy, immense personalities with a shared lack of moral compass own the driver's seat in this lingering peek at a late-'70s government sting operation and the flawed individuals caught up in its net. While the titular hustle is, obviously, the driving force behind this film's plot, the lion's share of its effort is spent inspecting the players themselves, rendering each from a variety of different angles and lights. In fact, the first two acts concentrate almost exclusively on the cast, to the detriment of the heist itself. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing, just a different approach than I'd expected. Of course, that ratio is flipped on its head in time for the climax, when our slick set of con (wo)men abruptly realize they're in way over their heads and the audience lets out a collective gasp; "Oh, crap."
Predictably, the A-list actors hit all of their notes with sly ease, with the best (Christian Bale and Jennifer Lawrence) completely disappearing into their roles. Poor Bale has transformed his body in this way so many times over the years - an enormous gut, meticulously bad combover and slumped posture epitomize this particular role - that it's hard to imagine he won't pay a steep price later in life. A few scenes are slower than they need to be, and the focus could stand to be a touch sharper, but without both indulgences this wouldn't be the film it is. Completely enveloping and fascinating, but ever-so-slightly underwhelming.
Loved it. Great story, great acting and plot twists I did not see coming.
Don't be "Hustled" by the reviews. "American Hustle" is okay and nothing more.
I'd call it a good movie with great acting. Not quite on the level of Russell's previous films, due to the story never quite becoming truly absorbing. But the characters are all terrific, particularly Lawrence and Adams -- God, the latter has never been sexier.
JL my love
Average movie with good casting and soundtrack.
Some amazing acting, lived up to the hype defiantly.
Definitely lived up to the hype. Not what I was expecting at all
IMO: OK, but overrated. Alternative title: Hair..
This movie is just so empty, you are watching it out of pity and you feel more bored as you go into the plot. Actors and acting are fine, by the way, but it doesnt lift the main problem - there is just nothing to watch! Actors are looking at the camera and are like telling you "Sorry, man, we are really want to show you something interesting, but all we got is this crap" And that is like the whole movie
Bale did a great job acting, but was hard to enjoy the film as a whole. Clever at times, only to be drug along with slow pacing. Decent beginning, the middle is a total snoozefest and decent ending.
great acting by Amy Adams and Christian Bale. it's a smart movie and in a way interesting.
but this movie is also slow, tedious and... well, quite frankly it's boring.
I rather watch a few episodes of White Collar, which is wittier, faster and more entertaining
Well, I am going to start this review with the best of it because it totally deserves the recognition, the performances. Christian Bale, Amy Adams, Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence, Jeremy Renner and Louis C.K. are all amazing! I want to talk about two performances in particular, my favorite performance that was Christian Bale's. He was the character by which I had more sympathy. He captivated me throughout the story but I thought his physical transformation would be relevant for the story. I was expecting a much more deep charater than the one that he was, but despite that, he is still my favorite. Then my second favorite performance (it's almost my favorite) has to be the fantastic Jennifer Lawrence. She provided me a few good laughs and just with 23 years old she can transform herself into Bale's crazy unbalanced wife.
The film's pacing is not the best. In my opinion the dynamic that was necessary to carry most of the scenes didn't existed. I found myself bored sometimes, thankfully most of the times the next scene made me feel interested again. So I guess the film has it's ups and downs. It's maybe a little bit too long also. The story is definitely interesting but it could have been done in a much more engaging way. I can see that David O'Russell valued the characters much more than he cared about the film's story.
Overall, American Hustle is a disappointment. I expected so much more from it. It could be great, instead of that is just good film.
Really hard movie to rate. Slow and long. It was interesting but rarely entertaining. Some really quality acting especially from Bradley Cooper, and of course Jennifer Lawrence. I want to give it a score around 8. But I can't get round the superflous scenes and fact that it was mostly boring.
American Hustle isn't a bad film... but it's certainly an overrated one!
Entertainment guaranteed. Great wigs!
If you’re going to make a 70s crime drama, you have to find a way around the inevitable Scorsese comparisons. I think this movie succeeds in that regard, David O. Russell carved out a nice lane for himself here, despite using a lot of the same directorial tricks. It’s mostly a character driven piece, which is fine because these people and their dynamics are intriguing enough by themselves. The acting’s great, the plot’s interesting, and the filmmaking captures the feel of the 70s perfectly (besides maybe going a little overboard with the needle drops). Its main problem lies in the first two thirds lacking in memorable scenes. It’s never boring to watch, but because David O. Russell relies so much on the improvisation of his actors, he perhaps doesn’t capture the most memorable version of these scenes. You get some kinetic, unpredictable moments from this directorial approach, however I think there’s a clear trade-off going on here. Still, the movie manages to focus up for the third act, which is this grand, emotional, satisfying pay-off. Was it overhyped at the time by critics? Perhaps, but I find some of the backlash it’s received from audiences since its release baffling. This is accessible, quality entertainment.
7.5/10
American Hustle features an impressive all-star cast and an intriguing plot about con artists working with the FBI. However, while the movie has its moments, the plot can be slow-moving and may lose the audience's attention. Although the film was well-received by many, some viewers may find it a bit overrated. Overall, American Hustle is an enjoyable movie that boasts a strong cast and an interesting plot, despite some pacing issues.
All the haters misunderstand the central tension of American Hustle. If you're not put on edge by Irving Rosenfeld's combover being dismantled by DiMaso in the first 10 minutes of the film, then stop watching, this film's not for you. Hair is everything in this piece and if you can't read into that aspect then don't bother watching.
Overhyped award bait, the actors all try too hard to act like “normal” people. It probably does take a lot of acting talent for fabulously beautiful people to look like a bunch of regular seventies sleaze balls, but excellence at mediocrity doesn’t entertain. Jennifer Lawrence does play a great dumb psycho chick but it probably isn’t too far outside her natural range. I like that the hustlers won against the man. But it took so long to get there that it lost all impact.
mmmgood actors totally wasted this movie is super mess-up it gives stress watch it I don't like to start a movie and don't finished so I watch the like 2 hours and a half but I never connect with any character everything was messy , superficial a lot of screams and things coming nowhere like I can't find something to say about this even the plot twist was messy too much information too much dialogue every character was on their own world don't waste your time this is a very bad movie I don't get why people recommend this.
Movie is good, Soundtrack is perfekt. Love it.
Despite the negative reviews I liked this movie. It’s gritty, it’s 70’s with a great soundtrack placed very well. Irving and Sydney are com artists forced to work with the FBI in order to take down the mob and such.... never a dull moment and quite enjoyable. Christian Bales appearance is crazy and adds to the momentum of this movie. If your on the dance just watch it. You won’t regret it
I was really really excited to see this film. I loved the director and the cast and it visually looked appealing. And that was the problem - the film was all sizzle and very little meat. It very much looked and felt like people were dressing up in funny clothes to put on a play. Ugh.... so disappointing. It wasn't terrible by any stretch of the imagination. It just wasn't great or even very good. The shame is that Christian Bale was amazing in his role.

omg... I have never written a negative review about a movie.. but this one was just terrible. I forced myself to watch it to the end just so that I can say honestly how bad it was. I have never seen such a boring and uninteresting movie in my life. Seriously, I have seen many bad movies but this one made me appreciate them. I expected a lot more of a Bradley Cooper - Jennifer Lawrence movie.
Let's put it this way, the ending is fairly good but everything else is horrible. The directing is far below average, he acting is average at best, the dialogue is cringe worthy throughout most of the film, and it has the most unnecessarily boring beginnings of all time.
For me, the movie was Jlaw and Amy Adams. The rest, oh what a crap!
Jennifer Lawrence did a good job trying to play an adult, but you can still tell she is very young. She needs to play parts more within her age group.
Amy Adams and Jennifer Lawrence did amazing work here, but as a whole, the movie never quite worked.
Totally disappointed with this movie.Don't understand the hype...
For this fuzzy scenario someone should get blanket of. Acting and visual shell, even if they are great, will not save everything.
Interesting remembered me of The Grifters (1990).
dear all pls i need help
i install XBMC and i signed in trakt.tv i install the add on and sign in my id but it give me" you need to open context-menu" / i dont find it plsssssssssssssssss help
What on earth is wrong with the shouts on this movie? Just saw it, quite possibly Christian Bales finest role. It's early 2014 but I'm gonna call it - my movie of the year. This is how you make a film. Full star cast, everyone amazing, perfect pace. So dense yet easy to follow. Perfect and undeniably a MUST WATCH. These don't come along often. 10/10
Jennifer Lawrence is indeed, brilliant.
BLEH. Boring and slow. Amy Adams and Jennifer Lawrence were the only thing that saved the movie.
Eu achei muito bom! A história prende e os atores fizeram um grande trabalho. Detaque para Jennifer Lawrence que com certeza, como já foi mencionado, é um dos maiores talentos da nossa geração. Good!
Another "trick me if you can" and Estonia - c'mon... ;>
Es basura, sobre valorada, es sospechoso que esta película tenga tanta fama inmerecida.
The story is good but the actors make the movie really great.Special mention to Jennifer Lawrence , this 23 year old actress is just the most talented one on her generation .
Ho I was about to forget , can someone get Amy Adams some bra , i think i see her boobs for a lifetime :)
C. Bale sempre arrebenta!
Not all it's hyped to be. An ok movie but pretty slow all in all.
My kind of comedy. Great cast!
I don't know, is not a bad movie, but I really boring sometimes.
First half: kinda boring. Second half: awesome. It's really slow.
"and The winner is...Jennifer Lawrence"
Second oscar in a row, no doubt About it
It was a mind train

I don't get what all the fuss was about. I didn't really enjoy it, it was a bit of a mess and I wasn't really interested in what happened to anyone in the movie. Honestly not sure why it's so highly regarded.
