3:10 to Yuma 2007

One of my absolute favorite movies. The development of the relationship between the protagonist (Christian Bale) and the antagonist (Russell Crowe) from enemies to mutual respect is beautiful to watch. Director James Mangold created a movie that stands on its own and accomplishes something that's almost unheard of: Make a remake that's actually better than the original. 3:10 To Yuma is easily one of the best westerns made in the "new age". My personal number two after Unforgiven. It has the gravitas that westerns like Silverado or the (new) Magnificent Seven lack.

Ben Wade: Be careful with that thing. That gun's got a curse on it.

I was a little bit surprised that I liked this movie as much as I did. Many of the reviews that I read said that it wasn't as good as the original. Of course, the fact that I never saw the original may have been to my advantage.

The film stars Russel Crowe and Christian Bale in the lead roles. Crowe's character is the stereotypical bad guy and Bale's is the everyday guy that is trying to do the right thing and raise his family the right way. The fascinating aspect of this movie was seeing each character flirt with the "other side". At times the characters appeared to straddle the imaginary line of right and wrong. Saying any more would give away some of the plot.

The only part of the movie that I disagreed with was the value that a father has of a son's opinion of him. At one point every kid hates their father and it isn't until a different level of maturity is reached that a son can appreciate a father. For me that took away from the end of the movie just a little bit.

3:10 to Yuma asks and answers the question of what it means to be a man. It means either being Christian Bale or Russel Crowe. Or being neither? Or both? Wait, what time is it?
Story: 7...simple plot needed to have more protagonist back story.
Script: 7...it was fine
Performances: 9...Bale, Crowe and Lerman are outstanding. Foster is at his creepiest. Rest of supporting cast is pretty solid.
Misc.: 6...forgettable score and cinematography. At least give me some slow mo horse riding!
Influence: 6...probably not seen by most folks
Overall: 7

I’m surprised I liked it as much as I did. I never really watched any westerns before. I would be interested in seeing the original. Great story and great acting. I wasn’t a Russell Crowe fan before but I am now.

I just re-watched. This is simply one of the best remakes of all time. Even better than the original. Both Christian Bale and Russell Crowe are perfect. I'm not a big western fan, so it's a lot for me to love one. The relationship between the two characters, the different code they live by and yet the two seemingly being the only two with any code at all. Just fantastic movie. 10/10.

A great western film that is a must-watch for fans of the genre. The movie boasts exceptional performances by the lead actors, who bring their characters to life with a level of intensity and authenticity that is truly remarkable. The story is well-paced and engaging, and the action scenes are both thrilling and visually stunning. Overall, 3:10 to Yuma is a movie that delivers on all fronts, from its impressive cast to its captivating storyline. Whether you're a fan of westerns or not, this film is definitely worth a watch.

I do not generally enjoy Westerns, but this one is still an alright film, considering the year... honestly, it's quite possibly a great film if you DO generally enjoy Westerns. The acting is good, the story is simple and linear, but it's about an hour and a half too long for me.

The beginning is drawn out character building and backstory for our protagonist; the good stuff really starts in the middle, then it hits another long flatline into boringsville until very near the end, where we get more character dimension for our leads, and some delightful enlightenment for our antagonist.

It's worth the watch if you really like Westerns, and for everyone else, maybe a quick scrub through with attention paid to the first 5 minutes and the last 10.

6/10

I would have rated this higher but other than the interplay between Bale and Crowe, I don’t think Crowe was a good fit for this role. He seemed like more of a douchebag and less of an outlaw. Of course, having recently re-watched Godless, I don’t think anyone could live up to what Jeff Daniels did. Bale, as usual, was outstanding.

Great action Western with Christian Bale as the down on his luck rancher and Russel Crowe as the outlaw. You won’t fall asleep watching this movie. Great scenery and a compelling story make the awesome performances flawless. A great watch.
