I really liked Esther in Alone Together. Her personality, whether it's dialed up for that kind of character or who she appears to be hanging out with other comedians, is a certain vibe. Whether that vibe translates across this movie...it seems like not really. It's a fair attempt, but what you don't have are high stakes, strong jokes, or characters that are feeling like they have their own lane on top of or in spite of the absurdity backdrop. One of the writers directed Grandma's Boy. I think if you watched this back-to-back with Grandma's Boy, you'd be able to explain what's missing or what doesn't work considerably easier. James Remar is really showing his range though trying hard to pull things together. Cameos, in and of themselves, aren't funny.
