The Three Parter stays on a high after the great climax of Utopia. Jon Simm's Master is so fun and really makes this episode. I love his blend of unhinged and menacing. He goes off the wall goofy in stuff like his interaction with the president or his response to killing the journalist. But he, even as he pounces into goofball territory, never loses that edge. The conversation between him and the Doctor was so engaging. The two evoke a real history with each other that makes they're dynamic compelling.

I think the series did as well as it could have to flesh out Martha's family before this episode but unfortunately episodes like The Lazarus Experiment didn't do as much as I hoped to really endear us to them by this point. Smith and Jones I think actually did the best job to characterize everyone but the series didn't build enough for their dynamics to truly hit like I wanted them to. Contrast the Joneses to character like Jackie and Pete who are such well rendered character in series 1 and 2 that their exists in Doomsday felt meaningful. You can start to see some of the gaps in the tension of the story.

But overall this is a solid continuation. The Master really works here and its setting up some interesting conflicts to be tied up.
