Perhaps this was innovative when it first aired, but I can't enjoy this. Plot is generic. The monster is stupid. Stage design is a paper mache and theatrical fog nightmare. Only the shuttle (and its FX plasma trace) and shuttle bay is somewhat interesting. Great picture of a quasar though. I guess that's how contemporary science imagined a quasar?

That's Spock's first command? Really? You're able to become second officer of the flagship w/o previous command experience? The Doctor and Spock arguing about the decent thing to do and how that conflicts with Spock's logic isn't great. Since Spock is such an intriguing character, this could have been told better. They also use the conflict between emotional and compassionate Kirk and strategic thinking commissioner Ferris to Illustrate the burden of command. Like the idea but that's badly told.

PS: I hate how the female yeoman serve drinks to the bridge crew. Is that a bar or something?
