1994 - is basically an homage to the movie Scream and starts asking all sorts of questions that are answered in the 2 follow-up movies. 1978 - is essentially an homage to Friday The 13th and is a proper slasher film. 1666 - answers all the questions we had and some we didn't even think about.
In other words, the story we thought we were watching in 1994 and 1978 suddenly takes a turn and 1666 gives us a whole new story. In hindsight, the clues were there.
