DC continues their trainwreck of a film universe with Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn). When Harley Quinn’s enemies come looking to settle the score with her after she’s dumped by the Joker, she makes a deal with a crime lord named Roman Sionis to retrieve a stolen diamond in order to square things; meanwhile a club singer named Dinah Lance teams up with a rogue cop to protect a young pickpocket who stole the diamond. Starring Margot Robbie, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Rosie Perez, and Ewan McGregor, the cast isn’t too bad, but it’s not all that impressive either. And the plot is all kinds of convoluted and puts its girl power/emancipation theme ahead of good storytelling. Still, the action scenes are fun and exciting, and the soundtrack brings a lot of energy to the film. An entertaining mess, Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) is yet another mediocre effort by DC.
