For anyone wondering, this isn't even close to right. I just watched it for the first time, and it's a parody that this person apparently took completely at face value. Like Starship Troopers, which some critics at the time unbelievably also took at face value, this is seething satire, only with more heart, and of course, Tim Burton's touch instead of Verhoeven.
@lnero I’ve seen this film twice and in my opinion I didn’t think it was brilliant but it wasn’t terrible but cheesy and i did find it entertaining and my second watch through didn’t change my first opinion on it so i guess each for they own and starship stroopers is one of my favourite films and mars attack doesn’t even come close to that film and so much better but again just my opinion and I respect your opinion..
@cinemanicbonkers I worded that badly. I had had a couple of beers, but that's not an excuse.
Specifically I'd say it's a response to gung-ho Team-America style films like Independence Day, and almost a chintzy remake of Doctor Strangelove, but with a different starting premise, but I can see your interpretation as "so bad it's good", as that's the style Burton was going for. I too, love Starship Troopers.
Ex@lnero it’s cool man and it’s pretty much a mock film to that film and both came out seem year and competed with each other and Independence day by far won in my opinion and there’s many films like that like bugs life and ants, Armageddon and deep impact and Matrix and existenZ and all had similar plots. I’m not interested in watching doctor strangelove, not my thing...
Yeah bad but good and again lots of films like that and that’s why i watched it again and yeah probably did go for that style and id say this film and peewees big Adventure are his cheesish films in my opinion and favourites being edwood Scissorhands and big fish..

A film that Tim Burton made without starring Johnny Depp unless he was hiding. It’s definitely different from his other work.
It’s one of them films like Armageddon and deep impact and ants and bugs life etc so obviously Independence Day and it came out the same year
I was surprised on the casting with all the big names probably because the last time I seen this film was in the 90s. Jack Nicholson playing two characters that’s different but they all worked well together and it was all for the money level of acting, definitely didn’t come in peace but it’s one of them so bad it’s entertaining kinda films and without its casting i’m sure I’d definitely look twice even thought I’ve seen it before.
