Expanding the scope of Neon Genesis Evangelion is what I've wanted thus far out of this anime, and Episode 3 aims to do just that, in multiple contexts that prove effective for relaying just how much damage has been done by this Angelic assault.

The first enhanced context comes in the form of Shinji's classmates, both of whom recall their losses and damages in the battles down by previous Angels and Eva units; in addition to showing a lessened classroom, it becomes clear how much has either been lost, or have many have fled, in the name of this nebulous war between machines and creatures. Shinji finds himself a the height of popularity with his newfound position as pilot, although this seems to be an antithesis to his more introverted role presented through previous episodes; it's expectedly awkward.

What's absolutely well done with Shinji are the beginning signs of madness elicited by his connection with the Eva-01, although it's simply breadcrumbs for now; the episode combines this, and the before-mentioned storyline Shinji's classmates, although it becomes difficult to imagine such a military organization would risk much over two civilizations - unless the human population has been decimated to a further degree. Time will tell.

Despite ending on an underwhelming note, "A Transfer" does necessarily expand the scope of this war to other side characters that will no doubt have prominence, and begin to contextualize Shinji's role in this affair even further. It may not be direct plot steps forward, but it's shuffling in the right direction. 7/10
