And the way that they tied the relatively distant past to both the relatively recent past and to the present was a thing of beauty and a superb example of when nonlinear storytelling is necessary in order to control when a given plot reveal -- Elliot's duality in this instance -- is actually offered up to the audience, as well as how to do it right.
