[7.4/10] Another interesting episode. I mostly enjoyed the A-story, which gave Chidi the chance to be more of the focus for one outing. The flashbacks to his inability to lie to his colleague about his hideous red boots (to put it in HIMYM terms, not pulling them off), kept escalating in absurdity, with Chidi’s uncomfortableness with his white lies making for a nice little character story. The recurring “this is why no one likes moral philosophers” line is pretty fun to boot.

At the same time, there’s a nice spiraling of lies in The Good Place as well. Eleanor wants to allow the lie of Michael thinking it’s his fault that things have gone wrong in paradise so that she can stick around, but starts to concoct an elaborate plan to off Janet to prevent him from leaving once she finds out how bad “retiring” is, which only leads to more lies for Chidi to have to keep.

Janet was particularly funny here, with her cheery “I’m not really alive” shtick contrasted with her begging for her life “as a failsafe” was a funny bit. And the push the button/don’t push the button sequence was amusing all-around.

The B-story, was a little undercooked. Tahani trying to throw a good farewell party for Michael and Michael lamenting all the human stuff he never got to do is a decent premise, but the show just can’t wring much humor out of it.
Still, we get another great moment of growth for Eleanor at the end when she confesses in order to keep Chidi from being tortured by his conscience into confessing. They’ve slow-burned her developing a certain selflessness and it’s a pleasant, dramatic way to have it pay off.

Overall, a solid ep that lets us get to know Chidi a little better in an amusing way.
