Star Trek: Voyager: Season 1

1x03 Parallax

The first regular episode of the show is quite an improvement over the pilot, and shows that in the early stages there was some attempt at making these character disparate. There's some meaty conflict going on between various people, and we also get talk about how difficult its going to be to keep the ship in a state of good repair (that's not going to last very long).

I also quite like the focused nature of the episode, it doesn't give us a ton of new people or places to sort through. The situation with the holographic doctor shrinking is pretty amusing, too.

We're given an early demonstration of how much technobabble is going to be involved in this show, but here it's at least done with enthusiasm. We get to see that Janeway herself is a scientist at heart, not only as she goes away to do her own private analysis of the anomaly but also that she matches B'Elanna's engineering theories note for note, and even bonds with her over it.

I find something creepy and awkward about the way Neelix drags Kes around with him.
