Veep: Season 4

4x07 Mommy Meyer

[8.3/10] Lots of good stuff in this one. I love sad sack Mike feeling overwhelmed at his job and reaching a breaking point with the whole "duck" thing. And again, Jonah and Richard turned out to be the perfect comic duo, with the pair of them bungling their way through Tom James's townhall.

I was, again, less enamored with the lobbying adventures of Dan and Amy. There were some amusing jabs at the lobbying industry at the concrete convention, and the byzantine connections to other industries and craven use of "sales bait" but I think they work better as part of the team.

But the real highlight of the episode was the juxtaposition of Selina and the girls versus Tom James and the guys. It was hilarious how Selina was constantly putting her foot in her mouth by the fact that she had been pretty well gone from the recent lives of the "buddies" she'd been so excited to see. Gary was hilarious playing the doting planner role, and the way Selina bristled at being still treated as lesser by her old pals despite being the damn President led to some good moments.

It was a nice contrast with Tom's easy manner with everyone. Again, Hugh Laurie is such a damn boon to this show, and seeing him play such a chipper, yet smooth guy is a really fun direction away from House. The way he still subtly uses that charm to get what he wants -- like the real dirt on the data breach situation, is well done, and the guys drinks group creates a nice space for some of Ben's trademark barbs.

Overall, a very nice episode.
