I wasn't remotely prepared for that pre-intro scene so was shook big time lol.
Great episode. Looks like we might have some links to season one with the symbol, so I’m assuming there will be more connections to follow or haven’t noticed yet. Still a lot questions from episode one to be answered, but we are starting to get to know the characters better.
Atmosphere. Acting. Script. So far all top notch. Jodi is still one of the best. Really enjoying it.
Why are the characters interacting like none of them are in the room at the same time? The first natural conversation so far was between the daughter and the young cop when they're sitting in the empty rink together towards the end of the episode. This feels like a boardroom at the new HBO amalgamation got together and decided to stipulate, because prestige television hasn't become more lucrative YoY, that every scene needs to constantly deliver something engaging and True Detective-y on its own every few seconds, this resulting in an overall absence of any atmosphere, direction, or emotion. All they needed to even make this feel even a little bit like True Detective was a few long overhead shots of the highways to get that mise en scene, so that they cut those down to a single 1.3 second shot each episode is pretty indicative. There's no sense of time or space, just constant flat interactions, CGI animals and AI-generated music posters. It's like a dumbed down ensemble show where every character has "cop-trauma," which means they act prickly and swear when they greet each other. Every other season of this show has had good writing and an even sense of pathos and humor, including the strangely Vince Vaughned second season, and to have endless interactions where characters are so literal and the audience is treated so unintelligently is very disappointing. That it purports to be about indigenous issues and female characters is tragic, because the worst kind of people are going to use that choice to criticize this when none of that has anything to do with why this feels so flat.
I'm trying to understand the whole praise of this season and the greatness. I cannot relate in any way. This is bad, actually nothing to do with the anthology "True Defective". First of all there is not one likeable character, Jodie Foster is really bad in her role and acting and very unlikable, too old now and not goog acting.
Also the music which was fantastic in the series now it is so bad and so out of place. The story has nothing to do so far with the anthology, this is just a show of crime, the title "true detective" and continuous of the series is a disgrace. Do they really going with the mythology, paranormal , folklore and mystics of the natives.
So disappointed.
It feels like something very different from True Detective, focus in paranormal stuff or something like that, but is really really good, I like the acting and the story is intriguing Omg, I want the next episode right now. Jodie Foster, Amazing!
This season continues to get worse by the minute. It's hard to take any of these characters seriously with such poor writing and acting. The force-fed callbacks to the first season are so hand fisted, it's cringeworthy drivel. There's nothing nuanced or subtle in this show. The show relies on tactless fabricated confusion, misdirection and endless meaningless side stories. The show begs to be taken seriously, but it's clear they haven't the first clue on how to go about it. Jodie Foster has been one of the biggest surprises in this show, and not in a good way. Her acting has been far below what would be expected, especially in the second episode. She had multiple scenes in the second episode that were downright laughable. I gave this show an honest try, but I don't see much in it worth hanging around for.
Uh... Why is this in True Detective instead of its own series?
And this season is "based" on True Detective? What?
True Detective always had its disturbing and terrifying moments. But the crime scene is straight from a horror movie. I hate horror movies. I wasn't warned. I wasn't prepared. I didn't like this episode due to these few scenes. Plus, a paranormal phenomenon or something? Don't know. Would have preferred a more realistic scenario. Something more in line with previous seasons. Don't get me wrong, overall quality is way above average, but it's perhaps just not for me.
Plus, I find it really hard to connect to any of these characters yet.
Plus, still can't decide whether the illumination of the town during Arctic nights is cozy or whether the orange and blue scheme is totally artificial and solely based on the director's palette preferences. This "orange and teal" look spreads like cancer in contemporary film production.
Most interesting part: the indigenous language the old lady was speaking. That's actually fascinating. I would love to learn more about those indigenous people.
Soundtrack episode 2:
‘Song for the Siren (Take 2)’ by Tim Buckley
‘Little Saint Nick’ by The Beach Boys
‘You’re the First, the Last’ by Blue Moment
‘Wannabe’ by The Spice Girls
‘I Love You Love’ by Johnny Cash
‘Pass Them By’ by Agnes Obel
‘Get Down Tonight’ by KC and the Sunshine Band
Feels like a season of Fargo in some kind of way, still good till now
It's still going well, it's surprising us. In this series the main characters always have traumas.
Grind and chirp
It's not interesting
Creepiness level turned up to eleven already!!!
Thought this was much better than the first episode. Also, like the (not so) subtle references to season 1. I think the writing, specifically the dialogue, was much better this episode. It sounded less robotic and more like people having a real conversation. I think the next exchange happened between Peter Prior and Leah Danvers at the ice rink. Excited to see where this goes. Also liked the The Thing-esque creepiness at the beginning of the episode when they first move the ice cube to the ice rink. Trying to be careful and not use spoilers lol.

I'm personally really enjoying it so far, this episode got me more intrigued by the case, I think Navarro and Liz are great characters and bounce off each other well. Of course this won't reach the level of season 1 for me but I still think this is a great story so far!
