The Vast of Night

It's like a radio drama... but you watch it. Let's call it -- cinema!

The film plays out over four key acts and they feature some wonderful one-shots, period piece settings and dialogue. Jake Horowitz and Sierra McCormick are a wonderful pair. This is sci-fi without the pew-pew, but it made the ending all the more delightful when it came.

The Comey Rule

At times the script feels very hammy and several scenes are too on the nose but it's hard to escape the drama and shocking events that are unfolding. Even more shocking is to think the event of The Comey Rule isn't from a presidency years ago, they're the current one.

Spiral

"Spiral doesn’t present a pretty picture of modern-day America, nor does it present a happy outlook for its future. But it’s a horror film, after all, and what’s scarier than a neighbour’s subtle racism? Or that sly shake of a head when a gay couple kiss in a parking lot from a homophobic parent? These are real problems and they spread from one generation to another by a continued cycled of perpetuated hate. One generation to another. It’s up to us to put a stop to it and films like Spiral are a reminder of that."

Long Story Short

You may feel like you've seen Long Story Short and to a degree we all have. The film's message isn't anything new, but it lands it with such a gut punch I was thinking about it for my entire drive home.

Earwig and the Witch

Earwig and the Witch is not Studio Ghibli's worst film. It's undoubtedly not Gorō Miyazaki's worst film either. However, it is such a forgettable movie from a world-renowned animation studio, and that’s disappointing.

Ratched: Season 1

Hated the idea of the show but the first episode gave me an interesting mystery so I decided to give it a chance. Absolutely falls apart by the end of the season. Not for fans of One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Next, this is just American Horror Story: Ratched Fan-fiction.

The Mortuary Collection

No, it’s not the scariest film, but it’s a lot of fun and in that regard, it reminded me a lot of Trick ‘r Treat. Super-fun, great direction, solid stories, well-acted and packaged together in a neat and bloody package.

By Night's End

I’m not sure what the end of the film says about the questions it initially asks, but it was a mindless afternoon watch and you could do much worse this Halloween season.

Crip Camp: A Disability Revolution

Great insight into a movement that helped change the rights of disabled people all around America.

The Beach House

Plays with themes and ideas you've seen before but none of them come together for any truly thrilling moments. The shorter runtime means it's a trim-watch, but the stiff acting by everyone doesn't help elevate the script.

The Devil All the Time

Uncomfortable with a cast so large and talented it can't keep up the pace with the script.

Scare Me

Scare Me has an interesting premise but the film doesn’t reach its full potential. The film is stretched way too long and the ending needed a re-write to achieve something special. It’s still fun thanks to the performances of both Cash and Ruben.

The Cleansing Hour

The Cleansing Hour is one of those films where the ending surpasses the rest of the film. As if the entire film was made just to reach the ending and leave the audience begging for a sequel. And it works: I would like to see a sequel.

32 Malasana Street

It’s been a while since I found a film’s script to go so far off the deep end that I wanted to turn it off, but here we are with 32 Malasana Street. A film that was, at most, going to be an overly average haunting film and is now one of my least favourite films I’ve watched in the past twelve months.

Sweet Taste of Souls

If it wasn’t for the super-unlikable leads Sweet Taste of Souls would have been a more enjoyable film.

All In: The Fight for Democracy

Must watch before the 2020 election. It perfectly explains the history of voting rights in America and hard-fought battles that continue to keep those rights for every American.

The Babysitter: Killer Queen

"I feel like my bar was already very low for this sequel and it somehow slipped under that. As a fan of the original, who has watched The Babysitter twice, I advise you to ignore this complete waste of a sequel."

Best in Show

Solid comedy with some great improv. Some jokes don't quite hold up but it's still full of belly laughs.
