Passengers

Stockholm Syndrome in Space. A creepy stalker dude takes a woman hostage and steals her whole future from her. But it's okay, because she falls in love with him, because he's handsome and how else do you cope with living with the only other human being you'll ever see for the rest of your life?! This is a really messed up movie, dressing an abusive relationship up as a romance. Pretty spaceship though.

Anna

Internet on a laptop in 1987? Stealing data on a USB flash drive in 1990? A CIA black site in the Czech Republic three years before that country even existed? Everyone has a mobile phone, at a time when almost nobody had a mobile phone. It's not often that a film makes me angry, but the moronic anachronisms in this film made me want to break something. This film is a lazy, stupid Red Sparrow wannabe. Watch Luc Besson's Nikita instead.

Under the Skin

Other reviewers must have watched the different film. Under the Skin is brilliant, and one of the best performances I've seen by Scarlett Johansson. This is a subtle, thoughtful film: A feminist take on the Man Who Fell to Earth. It subverts toxic masculinity and macho rape culture by showing weak, flawed men falling victim to a predatory female alien, while she is struggling to understand her own human disguise. Black Widow it ain't, but then, why should it be?

Nobody

Action Dad on a Roaring Rampage of Revenge. An entertaining place-holder while you wait for the next John Wick film.

Russian Ark

If you only enjoy loud distracting movies full of superheroes and car chases, this film might not engage you. If you like audacious film-making (the whole film is one long uninterrupted single take,) and non-linear Russian history, it's worth a viewing, although more as a cinematic curiosity than entertainment. The story (insomuch that it tells a story) serves only to showcase a very big museum, after all.

Under the Dome

"Under the Dumb." Utterly moronic plots (stupid people doing stupid things for stupid reasons) with execrable dialogue (all exposition, obsessed with reminding the viewer what happened two minutes ago,) I just wanted all the characters to stop talking. I watched all three seasons so that you don't have to.

Legion

A triumph of style over substance. Visually stunning but almost nothing ever happens. A random musical number is no substitute for an actual plot. By the third season I just didn't care about the characters anymore.

Clarice

A grade-A cast stuck in a grade-B story. A solid enough police procedural show, but a bit bland. A waste of a potentially fascinating character - it's Clarice Starling for goodness sake! The psychological horror could have been dialled up to eleven, and it just wasn't. Inevitably, 'Clarice' is overshadowed by 'Hannibal,' because that show was a stone-cold 10/10 classic.

Wayward Pines

Season one was pretty good: an interesting and original riff on the "Town With a Mysterious Secret" trope. Although I feel they tipped their hand too soon, with the Big Reveal mid-season. However, season two was really weak, without the central mystery to support the narrative, it just became a Walking Dead clone.

Bliss

I enjoyed it. The film explores a man's descent into addiction and detachment from reality after a trauma. Salma Hayek gives a really convincing performance as a paranoid, manipulative gaslighter. My only criticism is that it seems like the director can't decide whether he wants to make a Charlie Kaufman film or a David Lynch film, so it ends up feeling like a clumsy pastiche of both.

Honest Thief

Yet again, Liam Neeson is definitely not Brian Mills, in definitely not another Taken retread.

Wonder Woman 1984

Even an immortal demi-goddess can only be truly happy if she wishes really hard for a boyfriend. Not exactly a positive, empowering feminist message for the young girls this film is aimed at, is it?
