I hadn't seen this series since I was about 8 or 9, while I wouldn't say it is as grand as my childhood eyes saw it but I'd say it's a pretty decent watch. I remember what got me interested was the CG animation for the titular Zoids because it reminded me so much of the Beast Wars series that I loved watching. If you end up watching this I highly doubt you're watching it for the story which I'll admit really isn't that great, what you're most likely here for are the giant war machine fights which I actually find just as entertaining as I did back then. Some battles really hammer in the fact that the heroes aren't just fighting for their lives but for the fate of the entire planet. Most of the battles in season 2 left me in suspense and I couldn't wait to see how the heroes would pull off a victory.
One of the best parts of the show is without a doubt the cast of characters, it feels like an experience when we see the heroes first meeting as strangers and eventually see them evolve into a bigger bond. Van Flyheight actually reminded me a bit of how Luke Skywalker was in A New Hope, Van's recurring theme is actually how he brings hope to most characters and inspires them and he honestly is a main character that you find yourself wanting to root for. It's pretty engaging when you see Van grow from a cocky rookie child to an accomplished pilot. Fiona with her naivety and innocence gave me the same charm I got from Goku in his childhood Dragon Ball adventures. I can't say much for Zeke since he's more like the pet of the group lol. Raven's fury always leaves you in suspense to see what his next move in battle will be, I'd also like to add that Raven is probably the most developed character though I feel there was not enough buildup, in the end it feels rushed. The main villains, Prozen and Hiltz (Hiltz being the more bland of the 2, his motives aren't exactly clear either.), aren't that impressive if I'm being honest but I'll give them some credit because there are moments where you can really end up despising them and just can't wait to see the heroes defeat them.
The hand drawn animation looks pretty good to this day, CG animation used on the Zoids may be seen as dated by this day and age but I actually like it. I won't call the English dub magnificent but for a dub from the late 90s early 2000s I find it to be quite decent. Awkward line readings from time to time but it's tolerable. I actually thought the dub improved a bit in season 2. What bothered me the most in this series is actually that there's no proper ending episode it just had an abrupt end right when the final battle was over but I guess that's to be expected when you're watching an anime that's pretty much one big commercial for toys lol. I could go on about a few things but I think I've said enough by now.
