What the heck?! When I thought this show had turned nto gatbage it manages to hit a deeper low. Of course it has to center on tryhard storm. Can this voice actress chew the scenery any stronger? Guess we are gonna to find out in the inevitable conclusion when she finds out that, gasps, her new shinny armored prince is the actual big baddie! DUMb DUMb DUMb! Who could have seen that coming one thousand miles away?
[5.4/10] This was pretty weak. Spare me the romance between Storm and Akron, the leader of a society from another planet being battered by strange weather disturbances. I have only grown more contemptuous of the “insta-love” trope that afflicts too many television shows and films from this time period. X-Men is smart enough to put a fig leaf on it by having Storm at least acknowledge that their pairing is sudden before agreeing to be Akron’s queen. But their quick-fire passion for one another just doesn't track, and feels like it happens more by fiat than anything earned between the characters.
I might still be able to tolerate that if Akron didn’t seem...kind of terrible? He shows up to create a strange weather disturbance on our plan just so he can lure Storm over and take her away. She tells him he doesn’t want to go and he just drags her there physically regardless of her wishes. And even when there, he guilt trips her into doing his bidding. It rubs me the wrong way from the beginning and makes it all but impossible for me to buy into any romance between the two of them.
Granted, I think there’s a good chance that Akron is revealed to be the villain in part 2, to where his evil deeds will feel like a betrayal. But it’s hard to feel that sense of betrayal when Akron doesn’t actually seem noble, just like a garden variety insistent (if flattering) jerk from the beginning. And it makes Storm seem like a dope for buying into all of this.
Even apart from the romantic material, this one falls flat. The planet that Storm and our heroes visit is a bog standard quasi-greco roman setting. Its weather ring is a pretty feeble setup. And the locals’ resistance to outsiders is a familiar trope for the show and superhero stories as well. There’s nothing in either the design or the conflict oto really reach out and grab you
Overall, this is a low point in the season, and one that gives me little hope for this two-parter.
