This one is gonna be incredible. The animation on it is absolutely insane.
The only question is: What if... it would not be so blunt, annoying and creatively boring.
My episode ranking (ordered best to worst):
8 - I think more of this show should've followed this episode's direction and been about dealing with bad guys winning in the various movies.
9 - Kind of a continuation of 8, and ties the season together somewhat nicely. Has a few problems, due to being based on previous episodes, though.
2 - An unexpected new story that's fun, while still drawing upon familiar aspects from the MCU.
4 - A lot of people praised this one, but I thought it was just ok.
3 - The reasoning behind the plot ended up being kind of dumb.
6 - A meh episode. Not really noteworthy.
1 - Almost the same plot of the first Captain America movie beat for beat (until the end), but genderswapped. It isn't interesting. Should've diverged more.
5 - Tired zombie trope, and they don't even try to add some kind of spin to it to liven it up a bit.
7 - A genuine waste of time. The joke is not funny to begin with, and they drag it out for over 30 minutes. (I looked at the runtimes, and this one is the longest? Holy hell. What a supreme waste.)
Theme- 9/10
Rewatchibility- 9/10
Acting- 10/10
Kinematography- 9/10
Time- 10/10
Total - 47/5 = 9.4
Overall, very good season. There are some Infinity Stone inconsistencies from episode to episode but not so noticeable to distract during the episode, only after. Jeffrey Wright as the Watcher is great, hope to see him in live-action as well as Captain Carter. Bravo to the VAs who had to replace some of the OG actors for a great job at blending in. Looking forward to see what they'll do for season 2.
The Watcher: "Thor Odinson, Crown Prince of Asgard."
[Thor screaming]
The Watcher: "You've been chosen."
I thought I had skipped an episode by the time I watched the final episode:(
I thought this was alright! Some episodes were hit or miss. My favorite was the Doctor Strange episode (very Twilight Zone-y). Season ended with a bang.
"What If" is a highly ambitious show with one of Marvel‘s most interesting concepts to date. Yet, it does not really deliver on its promise. It’s very uneven, to say the least.
On the positive side it’s fun to watch alternative versions of characters we all know going on different adventures, leading to some creative, funny and even tragic episodes.
On the flip side, some concepts just don’t work and create very boring and bland scenarios.
I‘m also not a fan of the show actually connecting the episode in the final two instead of keeping them separate.
The "Guardians of the Multiverse" are an interesting concept, but it falls rather short to the limited time and sometimes odd pacing of standalone episodes. It probably would have worked better as a separate TV Show or even build up as a movie throughout Phase 4.
The voice acting (with many original actors returning) ranged from fantastic to tolerable.
The animation, while very flashy and with beautiful solo shots is mostly stiff and awkward, especially when it comes to facial expressions. Soundtrack is okay, but far from memorable.
I don’t know if my expectations where just to high, but whatever I thought this show would be, it was slightly disappointing. My personal favorite episodes are probably the T‘Challa as competent Star-Lord, the Doctor Strange one and the odd Zombie episode.
Waste of time. Looks like they made this because of covid lockdown + boredom
With it's growing pains obvious and several lackluster episodes, Marvel's first season of What If...? is easily one of the MCU's weaker efforts in a while, though it's ultimately saved by some fantastic animation, great ideas, and a couple of truly tremendous episodes that carry it to the finish line. The show's clear willingness to embrace the absurd imagery of the comics in regards to some of it's action scenes help it immensely, making it one of Marvel's most delightfully fun spectacles in the short term.
In the long term though, it'll be interesting to see how if What If...? continues on past this, especially when it's central narrative in the overarching framing device is self contained. As a starter season, it's a decent beginning and showcases promise, but as a stand alone entry it's a bit underwhelming.
Mediocre stories that don't answer the big questions of what if that mist marvel fans wanted. Goo animation and okay voice acting rounds of this series as uneventful and boring
Visual style is very comicky, good animation, it works well and looks good.
Bonus on most characters having their MCU voices.
Most stories offer a nice revisitation of the stories we know, with small changes that lead to bigger changes that lead to some WTF differences (I'm looking at you Nice Guy Thanos).
Quality is pretty variable but most are OK.
Final episodes make an overall story, linking them all together, which is nice on the concept, but execution is so-so. The final showdown that's supposed to be the climax is not that great. It delivers on entertainment but feels forced and a bit empty.
It's clearly missing a Gamora episode, weird.
Best episode: 1x03 What If… The World Lost Its Mightiest Heroes?
(Zombies could and should have been better but a lot of stupidity and cringe inside)
Worst episode: 1x07 What If… Thor Were an Only Child?
(This one is useless, both on character and story)
It started off pretty weak. The first couple episodes were not very interesting and the whole thing felt kind of pointless. Eventually it started getting interesting stories and I got a little invested. Don't expect them all to be great from there, though. Far from my favorite Marvel series, but if you can get past the first couple mediocre episodes, maybe you'll end up liking it.
Take it or leave it.
Strange Supreme isn't the bad guy
Strange Supreme was never the bad guy
The usual MCU good but not great stuff.
