[8.1/10] Some pretty surprising developments in this one. I have to admit, I assumed that Selina and Tom James were going to do something when they first paired them, but I thought that ship had sailed. Still, having him do all the backroom dealing and machinations, only to have it come to a head with Selina calling him out both for his political maneuvering and for his amorous feelings toward her that night, and the whole thing turning into a sexual romp was…unexpected? To be honest, I don’t know how to feel about it. It’s an outcome I kind of feared as an obvious place for them to go after Tom was added to the ticket, but there’s intriguing possibilities. And hey, Gary’s aghast reaction to it was superb.
So was Selina doing some wheeling and dealing. They make Selina so self-absorbed and generally incompetent that it’s almost awe-inspiring when you see her with the killer instinct that no doubt got her to where she is. The way she dresses down Congresswoman Nickerson and makes her say “okey dokey, Annie Oakley” was kind of a stunning scene, and even bits like promising Phil Lamar’s character the Secretary of State position, and writing off Doyle since he knows she doesn’t keep her promises was amusing.
Beyond that, I love Mike slipping in tons of hockey references because he thinks he’s getting a job with the NHL only to have his fired former colleague get it and be relegated to the LGPA tour. The details of the 50 Hottest Staffers in D.C. led to some amusing moments, with Gary’s typo-induced big headedness and Amy’s barely-restrained insecurity being particularly fun. And the adventures in New Hampshire continue to be entertaining, between Richard screwing up the footage twice or Jonah accidentally putting his foot in his mouth via Bill Erickson’s skillful hands.
Overall, lots of well-done stuff, particularly the business at the ball itself that maintained a nice comic energy throughout.
