[7.2/10] Not bad. This was basically one big 3 vs. 3 rumble with Peter/Miles/Dr. Strange vs. Ultimate Goblin/Doc Ock/Mordo, but it was an entertaining one. I have to admit that I find the show’s excuse to throw together what amounts to an all-Spidey fighting force underwhelms me a bit. It comes off as pretty contrived since we’ve never seen any sign of Scarlet Spider before, and the show kind of contorts itself to get Miles in the picture. At the same time, I kind of miss the old Shield Cadet squad, since that felt different and more complementary than a bunch of folks with essentially the same powers. But I’m at least on board with seeing where they go with the Spider Squad.
Back to this episode in particular, I already miss having Donald Glover as Miles a bit, but having the guy who does Luke Cage fill in isn’t a bad call. The show hammers the “you have to try to help people, even if it means making sacrifices” thing pretty hard with Miles, but that’s part for the course. I at least appreciate that Miles still gets to hold the title “Spider-Man”, and the rest of the Web Warrior more or less buying it.
I also appreciated the villains not being able to get along. I like how Goblin in particular will have none of the “do as I command” stuff, and his shattering of Mordo is some pretty striking body horror. I’ll admit, a lot of the 3-on-3 stuff became pretty static to me after a while, but it served its purpose. The whole “smash with the siege perilous to punch holes in reality” was a little corny, but not bad. And Goblin wanting to kill Spider-Man, any Spider-Man, up to including allying with Doc Ock to do it, works for the character.
Overall, I didn’t love this one, but it was generally enjoyable enough from start to finish.
