[7.3/10] Fun little magical romp. I like that the show had a lot of fun with this one despite the theoretically world-ending stakes. Peter as the “Spider Supreme” wondering about grape-scented webs and making less than theatrical requests of the eye of agomoto was a fun running bit. The overall theme, about deciding that Cloak can be trusted despite Shield’s desire to only recruit dagger, was pretty trite but worked well enough in context. And the reveal that Taskmaster is recruiting a force of his own is really intriguing.
Mostly, this one was just a lot of entertainment based on the big ol’ magic mix-em-up. Dormamu is a pretty silly villain with his giant flame head, but having our heroes run around and doing mystical stuff through a series of astral planes is cool visually. I’m a little tired of the whole “the good guys have been hyponitzed by the bad guys” routine. (We’ve done it at least three times with the Shield Cadets at this point.) But the new character designs are neat, and the magic-on-magic combat was generally cool and colorful. And hey, they even managed to find a dramatic use for Cloak’s powers to help save the day, albeit in a bit of a contrived fashion.
Overall, this is more fluff than substance, but the fluff is very enjoyable with its magical flair, and the show leans into that while introducing two new characters.
