[7.5/10] Another episode that feels like it’s delivering something big that the show’s saved for a rainy day! Bucky definitely redeems himself here by connecting Ro with Casey, her long lost brother. I like the moral dilemma here, of Casey wanting to protect Ro and avoid losing her again, even if it means turning her and Zeta over to the Feds and betraying her trust. It’s a little mixed up whether he was ever really going to do it and had a change of heart at the last minute, or if this was his plan all along, but it works.
Likewise, there’s a thumb on the scale from Casey’s boss, who smells a hot story and is trying to get Casey to turn in his sister and her robotic friend so that their “vid news” organization can get the scoop. You see Casey’s resistance to the idea from the start, and the boss makes for a nice instigator, both calling in Bennet and trying to get the story himself.
What I liked most about this one though is just seeing Ro and Casey together, recounting the years. We not only get to learn more about Ro’s past, with her and her brother apparently staying with their grandparents for a while after their mom left, but we learn that her headstrong ways were there from the time she was a tyke, earning the nickname “Little Bulldozer” from her grandfather. That name as a shibboleth between Ro and Casey is a nice touch, and I like that Ro has a new ally in the world, one with the warmth and envelope-pushing nature that marks him as a Rowan.
There’s also some solid action in this one. Zeta escaping the NSA agents on the Golden Gate bridge, while Casey runs interference in a hovercopter, is a solid setup. Zeta’s rescue doesn’t make much sense in terms of physics, but still makes for nice moments for both him and Casey.
Overall, this is a nice Ro episode, where she and her brother both struggle with moral choices and the rush of reunion, ending things in a really uplifting place.
