Wow! An actually good alien mythos episode! By Chris Carter! He actually thought through what he was writing. He built up so well the logical things to happen for the previous episode to make more sense, and has provided a solid foundation for the next part. Wow.
I have a few criticisms. I don't like how cancer man ended up saving Mulder. I don't like it, but on the other hand, it can make sense in a few ways. First is that he let him go to further the disruption and chaos that Mulder brung. That the cancer man can continue kind of controlling and misdirecting him. Maybe cancer man even likes it, likes the game, and tries to use Mulder and what he's doing for his own ends. Another reason is that Mulder might be his son, which has been built up a little, and even further built up in this episode when cancer man shed a tear when he entered Mulder's apartment, which was another good moment, along with him confronting one of the other bosses, talking about not being in the loop and not to underestimate Mulder. Another reason for letting him go was the revelation at the end, that cancer man knew that Mulder had just taken water.
But that leads me to another criticism. It's just water? Eh? I can't remember what happens next, but i don't like if it's actually water. That was a top secret area with all the alien evidence. Maybe Scully's cure is contained in the water. There's no way it's another hoax, i won't believe that.
Another criticism is Scully passing out after just revealing the grand conspiracy.
That's about it. Apart from those, i really liked this episode. I loved how we finally saw Mulder go through the door that we first saw in one of the beginning episodes of the show, maybe the first episode, the door that cancer man goes through to deposit the alien evidence. We finally see Mulder go through it and get what he needed. I also liked how we saw behind one of the random doors that it was a room of alien bodies. I was thinking maybe these are alien bodies or maybe they are fakes, either to use to convince Mulder and other people/organizations around the world, or maybe these were the company's test experiments in creating fake alien bodies. It's all really interesting and interesting to think about and theorize.
I liked Mulder killing the guy who spied on him. I liked the planting of his body. I liked Skinner later getting the full information that it's not Mulder's body, and his hesitancy in what to do with that information. I like Scully doing the actual work in deciphering this alien dna and then also tying that to her virus, it's just genius. She actually had concrete proof, and then she announced to the room of important people in the FBI about the grand conspiracy, it was all just so good.
I liked in the beginning with Kritchgao talking about what the government was doing and various conspiracy theories throughtout the decades, but he wasn't talking from a position from supreme authority and knowledge, as we have seen in the show from Mulder's experience about certain alien stuff, and this is further compounded by Kritchgao not having access to level 4. It's all so good and logical.
I liked Mulder going to the lone gunmen to have the sample analyzed.
There is no further convolution of the alien mythos. In fact, it's more straightened out and grounded, and we are actually making concrete steps forward in getting answers, gathering proof, and exposing conspiracies. It's all so damn good.
Chris Carter, the absolute madman, is winning me back.
The second part of the trilogy that ended Season Four. Mulder looks for the cure for Scully's cancer at the Dept. of Defense and in the process finds alien bodies in the basements of the pentagon. Mulder finally cares about something more than his own quest for the truth. This is the episode that Kritschgau lets Mulder know about the conspiracy and that's its military not necessarily alien. This episode is loaded with voice-overs giving tons of exposition.
Secondary characters in this episode: Michael Kritschgau, CSM, Syndicate, Blevins, Scully's brother Bill, Scully's Mom
