The X-Files: Season 4

4x02 Home

"Home" could probably be considered tame by today's standards and might be a disappointment to many who are aware of this episode's notorious reputation but "Home" remains a very disturbing experience. On top of that, it is one of the show's most intelligent episodes with an incredibly strong commentary on modernity, change and the underbelly that exists beneath the idealized exterior.

"Home" is much more than a visceral and disturbing experience. It is also one of the most beautiful and 'laid back' episodes of the show so far, opting for a less traditional X-Files piece of storytelling.

"Wonderful Wonderful" by Johnny Mathis, as used in the context of this episode, yields as a similar effect to other pieces of music like "In Dreams" in BLUE VELVET and "Stuck in the Middle with You" in RESERVOIR DOGS. Disturbing and chilling to no end. Also the cinematography and direction in "Home" is absolutely breathtaking. Classic.

The is a reason "Home" is a classic episode. First of all, it stands up alone. Unlike all the conspiracy crud that was already ruining the series by Season 4, this one gets back to the "monster of the week" which was the format for all their best episodes. Mulder's odd sense of humor is particularly spotlighted here as is Scully's exasperation with said humor. Disturbing images that I won't spoil here make this more than a "prequel" to the Wrong Turn movies. Check out X-Files Season 4, Episode 2 for a good chilling scary night. 9/10

This episode is shocking. It’s the one about the inbred Peacock family in Pennsylvania. The Peacock brothers are brutal and practically superhuman. I like the way Scully shoots one of the brothers repeatedly and he doesn't go down. This is not for the squeamish. It's probably the most disturbing X-Files episode. The only one that I think compares, at least to this point in the series, is Season Two's "Irresistible".

When they bought up Mayberry and then the sheriff's name is Andy Tyler and he's partner Barney I honestly thought this was going to be a comedic X files episode, But it turned out to be disturbing and creepy reminds me of that creepy ass video game called Outlast.

I'm surprised that this is one of the highest rated episodes of the show on IMDB, which I guess was due to the subject matter of the episode, which was played purely for shock value, and had no critical value or merit. It's certainly a disturbing episode, but definetly not a good one.

I only watched once because when it originally aired, as a child (I was 10 when I saw), I was deeply disturbed by this.
I was afraid it wasn't gonna hold to the pass of time, but boy it did. the cold opening and the sheriff's murder still give me the chills

This episode is a disappointment. It's one of the least intelligent episodes of this series produced to date. It has nothing to say. There's no theme, message or commentary to be found. It's as shallow as a mud puddle in the desert. It has tone cribbed from Hooper and Romero. It's disturbing for the sake of being disturbing.

Select elements are fine, such as some of the production, acting and atmosphere. While more polished (in ways) than select past episodes, this is, unfortunately, one of the worst. However, the writing, coupled with much of the execution, drags it down.

Of note, this episode contains some of the most inane delivery, unintentionally funny and contextually inappropriate dialogue in the series (yet), which is a tall order. It almost, almost, seems like a parody. It's not. There are several scenes that are so bad, it's challenging to imagine those involved were serious. That's the real mystery of this episode.
