The X-Files: Season 2

2x04 Sleepless

Really well shot episode! The whole show has an interesting visual style and this story is a great example - just look at the shot with Scully's glasses reflecting her blue screen while she is edgelit and cast in shadow, or the shot with Mulder in darkness holding up the broken glasses into the light.

This is about some Vietnam vets who were experimented on by a couple of doctors. The doctors were trying to make super soldiers, men who never needed to sleep. The experiment worked because several of the men we meet hadn't slept for 24 years. But people are being killed by one of the soldiers who is able to make people hallucinate. This ties into the Story Arc because Krycek makes his first appearance and we find out that he is working for the Cigarette-Smoking Man. The CSM has gotten the X-Files closed down and is trying to keep Mulder and Scully apart. Turns out, Krycek tells CSM that Scully is turning out to be as much of a problem as Mulder already is.

Secondary characters in this episode: Krycek (his first appearance), Cigarette-Smoking Man, X (his first appearance)

Omg, it's the Candyman. I KNEW I had seen him before. I love how Candyman seems to have been his entry into doing 30 years of horror movies.

Interesting story, and nice to see some important side characters start to show up in the show.

While I thought the premise of the episode was interesting and Tony Todd is as great as he always is, the episode itself was a little dull.
