It's a nice attempt at a moral lesson, but it's full of holes. Firstly, there's a lot of things you could do if you were immortal much better than trying to die. You could get rich by force, watch as culture and technology progress, oversee generations of your offspring, become a legend and so on. Secondly, if you're sentenced to life in prison and you want the death sentence, you could just mass murder everyone in prison, or commit other, lesser crimes (i.e. you don't even have to murder someone). But, even if you did get the chair, you wouldn't die and would just get life in prison. He didn't think it through too well. What makes the least sense is that he attained immortality because he feared death, yet as soon as he got it, he just kept trying to die.
