I appreciate how this retelling of the (already twice-told) story goes relatively easy on the red herrings. We see the police investigate leads that turn out to be dead ends, but never do we get the sense that the show expects neither us nor the detectives to assume that they're this close to catching the villain. You could argue that this makes the protagonists seem passive, but I'd rather that than the enervating audience manipulation most whodunnits resort to in order to maintain tension until the very end.
