The Sinner: Season 3

3x08 Part VIII

Normally I, too, am put off by “slow burns”. But, for some reason, I found this season absolutely riveting. The interplay between the main characters, the subtle nuances and manipulations, the fascination of Harry with Jamie, and vice versa, the internal struggles, the darkness of humanity, the betrayal, the descent into madness. Accented by the dark, haunting, atmospheric soundtrack.

One thing I noticed about the negative comments posted… they often had questions as to “why did Harry/Jamie/Sonya do (such and such) so stupid blah blah!” The comments indicate the posters don’t like this season …why? It’s because they don’t comprehend. The characters were so complex and beautiful in each their own ways, yet so dark, and the show was so full of raw truths. Human nature is to fear/despise that which can’t be understood, so it’s just easier for some posters to express their dislike this season.

In an amusing twist, negative posts could be viewed as the subdued equivalents of the adverse reactions from the 4 partiers in the hotel room when Jamie presented them with his uncomfortable “truths”.

This season hit on a deeper level. I’m shook.

A hugely disappointing finale to an underwhelming third season. I expected a lot more plot twists and mind games. This season was just meh. No intrigue, no thriller, just portray of a guy with serious mental problems.

I needed more explanation:

  • Not enough development of Jamie. Too many questions about his past. For example, why did he so easily fall prey to Nick?

  • I think Sonya is the biggest freak of them all. What was the point of introducing her? She was just so weird the whole season. So, Jaime and Nick headed to her property randomly?

The only good thing was the last scene between Ambrose and Jaime. After all that ‘deep’ crap Jamie was just as scared as everyone else, very poetic. And even after all he did, I felt bad for him.

compared to previous seasons this was so disappointing and boring.

This season was more slow paced than the others, and it was more philosophical and emotional, but it wasn’t bad! It was a different type of chase, like what do you do when you know who did put can’t exactly prove it? Matt’s performance was amazing, and that last scenes facing off Ambrose and then death it was just mind blowing but in a subtle way, subtle is how I would describe this season. The only thing that I wish was different is Sonya’s presence, cause how did Nick knew where to go and that a woman was living there, it seems like he planned that and he previously knew about sonya’s existence so I feel like an explicit Sonya and nick connection was needed, like imagine if at the end when Ambrose visited Sonya he found out a painting or picture of Nick, a little twist was needed there.

It's always felt like there was this connection between Harry and Jamie. The ways that they omit that aren't always in line. Jamie pushing Harry to confide in fate, chances and risks. Harry constantly trying to get Jamie to his jail cell, but he eventually saw through and it turned into a desire to help a man who may not look like it, but is just the same as you. After he pushed through all that, Harry decided to give in to the game, but at what cost? At the end, Jamie is the same to Harry as Nick was to him, in whatever messed-up way that is. They were meant to collide.

It was nice to have those final moments with the two of them. I had hopes for an ending that included Jamie in handcuffs sitting across from Harry, just talking casually during prison visits, but that would be too beautiful of an ending for this television genre, wouldn't it? So sad.

Season 3 started out so well and promising but at the end it just felt a little flat and disappointing. The acting was amazing all around - even though I don’t think they used everyones talent the right way. Like with Chris Messina, such a talented actor, he was so good in his scenes, but I can’t help but feel like they used him the wrong way - for example in episode 7 where he had ONE scene and that scene was cutting Jamie’s hair. They could have gotten so much more out of both him and the character (Nick) he was playing. I actually think the season wouldn’t have been so disappointing if we had gotten more flashbacks of Jamie/Nick … more answers.
