I like the parody of "Amélie" all this series. OH God Da** it i like this movie!
[8.2/10 on a post-classic Simpsons scale] What I liked about this episode in particular is how both the comedy and the conflict were based on character. Sure, there’s a bit of the show’s standard“cruise through a du jour subculture” comedy with the drag queen material, but that material is centered on Marge and her well-established timidness.
In truth, the flirty, drag queen version of Marge doesn't necessarily feel true to the character, even as an extrapolation of her personality, but it clicks nicely as a representation of her finding her inner confidence. There’s some amusing bits about Marge’s usual tameness and the quirks of drag queen culture there, but the heart of the episode is centered on Marge discovering herself through a theatrically fierce view of femininity that gives her strength and confidence.
The fact that the conflict comes from Homer inadvertently wrecking that, but then demonstrating that he understands, by getting into drag himself, is a good look for him. (Figuratively, not literally.) Lord knows the show has done “Marge and Homer are on the rocks” stories to death, but this one is centered on a legitimate emotional conflict and has a satisfying-if-tidy resolution and earnest effort to make good from Homer. The musical number in this one is a little tepid, but otherwise, the A-story is a winner.
The B-story is brief, but also enjoyable. The idea of Lisa trying to make the world a little more magical by surreptitiously helping people is a solid one. The small bits are generally cute, and while the Skinners’ tiff is predictable and quick, the fact that it ends with everyone thanking Lisa for her kindness, and finally giving her a place to sit at lunch is a sweet note to go out on.
Overall, this is the high water mark for the season so far, with a nicely told pair of stories centered on who each of these characters are.
