I was SUPER bored during this one.
[4.3/10 on a post-classic Simpsons scale] Well that was a big load of nothing. I enjoy a good “The Simpsons are going to ____” episode as much as the next guy, but this was a less an episode of the show than it was one big, lame tourism ad for New Orleans. The Big Easy is nice, but doesn't need The Simpsons soulless fawning.
The plots here are basic retreads with no real heart or punch to them. One is a redo of the far superior “Moaning Lisa”, where after being told to give up her dreams for basically no reason, Lisa is down, only to be cheered up by Bleeding Gums Murphy’s unnamed nephew. It’s a shameless attempt by the show to siphon some goodwill from its past glory, and the episode does little to make Lisa’s pain real or meaningful or, god forbid, funny in the interim.
And Bart gets bullied and somehow feels better through the use of voodoo? It’s a lazy storyline that just kind of peters out and doesn't’ bring any laughs either. That’s a real theme with this one, as joke after joke falls flat. There’s tons of cartoony nonsense like Bart getting Annie’d. There’s jokes that are just plain weird like Milhouse nursing a crush on Maggie. And then there’s Homer just listing dishes from New Orleans for what feels like two full minutes, with nary an actual gag in sight.
This is really the pits, and all the bourbon on Bourbon Street couldn’t make it go down smooth.

I love Lisa episodes, they are always so sweet.
