[7.0/10] This is a hard one for me to judge. On the one hand, I found Los Vatos Locos to be just the worst. And I know we’re supposed to hate them, but it feels like one of those Niles/Frasier situations, where to make our already douchey, awful protagonists seem okay by comparison, the show introduces their even douchier, even more awful antagonists. I am a big fan of Ken Marino and can’t deny his comic talents even in weak roles, and the bit with their lackey Tug had me in stitches (with shades of Jimmy Pesto’s resident sycophant), but overall I got pretty tired of their presence pretty quickly, as it leaned in to the show’s broader elements, with a lot of sophomoric humor without any real layers or cleverness to it.
Still, there’s some good performances and good bit. I should hate it because it’s just as broad and dumb as anything, but I loved the nature documentary narration for Kevin bits. It was just silly enough to click for me. I was more lukewarm on Taco teaming up with Jim McMahon, but it’s at least cute. I wasn’t really a fan of the B-plot where Jenny hangs with Los Vatos because they “treat her like a lady”, since it seems like she’d be able to smell their douchiness from a mile away, and again, she seems meaner to her husband and nominal friends than usual. And while Andre’s meatless and lame tailgate is worth a chuckle or two, the whole bullying thing is pretty unapologetically terrible.
Overall, this episode is just a giant mixed bag, with some good performances and laughs and energy in places, but also some of the shallow juvenalia and hit-or-miss character stuff that inevitably drags the show down.
