[6.3/10] Almost every time another actor cameos on The League, I end up wishing that the show was about them. I may not be the biggest Ruxin fan in the world, but holy hell, casting Jeff Goldblum as his dad is inspired casting, and the dynamic between the two of them half-convinced me that I’d watch some kind of father-son sitcom spinoff featuring the two of them. Goldblum, as usual, is great here, between his Lucille Bluth-like putdowns of his own son, his satisfying takedowns of the rest of The League, and his great versions of Ruxin’s mannerisms from the “hmm” to the, god help us all, “vinegar strokes”. I don’t know why he’s slumming it on this show, but the quality of The League went up a full letter grade every time he was on screen.
Were it that the rest of the episode could keep up with that standard. I’m a fan of Sarah Silverman, but I didn’t care for her here as Heather, Andre’s hypersexualized sister. While Silverman’s great at raunch, she deserves far more than just a heap of bargain basement ribaldry, and aside from a minorly amusing exchange with Jenny, that’s all the show gave her. The rest of the episode was no great shakes either, with the whole truffle bidding war and guinea pig in the turkey routine coming of really contrived and broad.
Overall, give us more Goldblum! But the show’s business as usual failed to impress otherwise.
