[5.7/10] Another less-than-great episode. The whole bit with the group going over the Ruxin’s to watch the games, only to get roped into an extended lunch feels like hacky sitcom schtick. And Ruxin’s hold thing about Taco being the “teasing horse” for his wife goes nowhere and comes off like more retrograde crap. Again, really anything involving Sofia feels like it’s poised to be one or both of those things thus far.
I also didn’t care for what I assume was the most heavily-advertised part of this episode -- Pete contacting Terry Bradshaw. Maybe it’s just the Fox Studios corporate synergy bleeding through that turned me off, but it felt kind of gratuitous. And as a football fan, it’s hard not to roll my eyes at the idea that some hardcore devotee would be trying to contact Terry Bradshaw for fantasy football advice. At least they try to put some kind of (predictable) twist on it with Bradshaw intentionally screwing over Pete, but the whole thing feels really forced.
I also liked the idea what the show was trying to do with Andre and his other league, but didn’t like the execution. The fact that he’s the top dog in his alt league feels like the episode of The Office where you learn that Michael Scott is basically the Jim of his second job, and there’s some fun comedy and commentary about how people are different in different contexts. But again, it just makes the group feel like jerks when they admit that busting on him is the glue that holds their league together, and make him break up with the league that actually appreciates him.
Honestly, it feels silly, but the bit that made me laugh the most was Kevin and Jenny’s daughter having a “fecal fascination” that comes out in predictable but still cheaply amusing ways, and the fight over the dog’s name. It is, once again, pretty broad sitcom comedy with a potty humor twist, but it’s still the only thing in the episode that earned a chuckle out of me.
Overall, another dud. Hoping the show finds its footing soon!
