I feel like an extra 25 or 30 minutes would have been better to draw out the drama a little more. Still, pretty good and I can't wait for season 2!
There better be giraffe scene in this one.
I really don't know how to feel about this episode, I felt it kinda rushed and not as good as the other episodes before. Nevertheless a very good one! Can't wait for season 2.
FINALLY GIRAFFES
Just as brutal as the game, well done. Only downside is it felt short and rushed. Would have been nice for a little more time in the hospital with strategy from Joel instead of him going all terminator.
Damn Pedro is ruthless. Amazing acting.
"Swear to me, swear to me that everything you said about the fireflies is true"
"I swear"
...
"Okay"
Ahhhh
I knew what was coming, but I wasn't prepared for Ashley's scene at the beginning. Wow...
That’s scene with Ashley was simply beautiful
A beautiful conclusion to the season and straight from the game. The attention to detail, the emotions, the ending. I'm overwhelmed with emotion right now. And the giraffes!! Thank you Neil Druckmann for bringing this story to a new audience.
They actually added giraffes lol :giraffe:
Joel is such a loving and selfish man at the same time. Great season finale and season all together
Call me crazy but I prefer "you cargo" Joel than "baby girl" Joel. He was already reckless and now he's lying to Ellie....
A perfect ending to a near-perfect season of television. This show has truly set the new standard for video game adaptations in television/cinema.
There were a couple of episodes (namely 5 and 8) where I felt that we could have done with some more time with those specific story arcs, but that comes from me having experienced the game and knowing what content was cut for the show. But I've been speaking with many friends each week who have not played the game prior to watching, and they don't feel it was rushed at all. That tells me that the pacing is perfect, and that rushed isn't the right word to describe it; rather I just wish those episodes were packed with more content and time.
"Swear to me."
Absolute perfection.
That farmhouse in the opening of the episode looked so much like the one Ellie and Dina lived in, surely that's not a coincidence :eyes:
It was amazing to see Ashley Johnson finally appear, and I did not spot that Laura Bailey cameo until the credits:eyes:
Pedro Pascal making me like a character I previously hated, and Bella Ramsey doing justice to a character I love. Could not have asked for better actors!
This adaption had it's flaws like the original, but honestly I think it's actually better than the game.
I'm going to miss this show so much, and I'm so hyped for the next season covering my favourite game of the two, and I'm so excited to see the live action version of more of my favourite characters from the game:heart_eyes:
seeing ashley johnson got me so emotional... and the clear transition of joel from the colder guardian to a fatherly figure also got me
What an underwhelming episode. Expected much more, but the acting was kinda plain and although I can't pinpoint one single moment that threw me off, the pacing was off for me as well. Great season, nonetheless, it only deserved a more polished ending!
When I saw the running time of the last episode, I wasn't sure they were going to make it in such a short time. But they nailed it, they fucking nailed it. The ending left me torn apart, just like the game did. I fucking love and hate this story and those characters so much.
On a brighter note, the farm from the beginning looked very familiar. Also, it was kind of strange to see Ellie giving birth to Ellie. And we even had a chance to see (well, kind of) Laura Bailey!
"I'll follow you anywhere you go."
Goddamn. Just like the original game, as perfect of an ending as one could hope for. 10 years and multiple playthroughs later and this ending still hits just as HARD. Bella and Pedro gave it their ALL, the entirety of the show. All the subtle and big changes and additions here and throughout the show just made the game and the world even richer. I can't wait to get hurt again. Endure and survive.
It's a really good adaptation and a solid ending for this first season. The build-up to this worked out well, so the expected rift felt pronounced because Joel and Ellie's bond was cemented in the last episode. I've no complaints because they stuck to the already excellent game version, then they enhanced it by giving us Ashley Johnson, who murdered her role as Ellie's Mum (SO META), they also revealed why Ellie is immune in a brilliant way, and we got our Giraffes.
9/10 - for more joke puns, recognisable places, a familiar weapon swap during the hospital massacre, a glimpse of Abby's dad, that first-person perspective when Joel got knocked out, and the promise of high drama and badassery next season.
Maybe a weird thing to get hung up over, but I'll miss Ellie's backpack. Especially after the last episode's moment where Joel specifically goes back to pick it up for her when she is held hostage.
That was it for the season finale? Complete-let down and underwhelming. Even if it was an adaptation, the fact that it is, it still has to be transformed fitting of the medium.
Episodes 1 to 8 were all superb. Then episode 9. Didn't do justice to Season 1 when it was going strong.
Although 1x08 is i think my absolute fav out of the first season, the series finale was great in its own lane. How far has Joel come from the very first episode when all he could do was bark at Ellie and she would bark at him in return. A beautiful development of both characters throughout the season. I can't wait for S2
(401-word review) Episode-wise, this was better than the previous two. As a finale, it felt lackluster. Throughout Its entirety, it felt like it was fizzling out instead of whatever the opposite of that would be. The ending, in particular, fizzled out rather pathetically and then ended. In the game, there was the element of emotional attachment and all the progression and growth between Joel and Ellie, which carried over to the ending, amplifying it.
However, here, the performances by Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey, especially hers, lacked substantial impact. We're supposed to be on the same page with Joel and Ellie's relationship: seeing the progression and growth to that place, which elevates the ending, except that aspect has missed the mark throughout the show, with the writing, the performances, and the chemistry. That has made it seem stilted and unearned.
I'm already someone who doesn't get attached to fictional characters/shows/films, so this won't mean much. But I don't have an emotional attachment to these characters. With the game, I can logically see the reality, even if I don't have the final piece of emotional attachment. With the show, I barely witnessed that intended reality, if ever.
Then, there are the implications of the ending. It's pretty straightforward: no, not like the majority sees it. I can already see it. Most people who haven't played or seen the games will consider Joel's decision was at the level of Joffrey Baratheon (I haven't watched GoT), to where now, in their eyes, he's one of the most despicable fictional characters ever. I doubt some of the same people who played the games, who constantly parrot that, felt that way back when the first game came out; they'll claim they did, though.
But the scene with Joel doing the right thing was the indisputable highlight. Some people may stay awake at night because of it, though: consumed with thoughts that it was wrong. The score cue during it was immaculate. I would do that Italian 'chef's kiss' if I could. It could've been better by being slightly longer, though.
This season has been an inconsequential, puny flame, at its strongest with the premiere, slowly fizzling out with every subsequent episode, and finally, at its weakest with the finale. This finale's entire section in the game was better. Quite unfortunate.
Time to profoundly forget and disregard mostly everything regarding this show in less than a week.
Commenting to say I wish they wouldn't reinforce this idea that Ellie is not feminine just because she's tough and bold, especially when people keep criticizing the actress because she's not conventional. Your lead character is a badass young girl, less of the stereotypes!
After a pretty good penultimate episode, I felt this slightly dropped the ball. Everything felt rushed. Still overall, the season is a success.
welllllll, Sadly we came to the end, Great ending butttt why they didn't care about much of details like that scene from game while getting out of the hospital, at the game was another wholeeee hype! so i wish they really could make this episode especially a bit longer and giving more of details and that stuff, But anyway what a great ending.
PS: after this episode the storyline will start to get so shitty:) so let's see
Another day, another TLOU episode to emotionally mess me up.
I loved Bella Ramsay in both GOT and Catherine Called Birdie, but she really, consistently floored me in TLOU. The last scene feels on paper like such a minimal one for a season ender, but the way she plays it with all the roiling emotions and conflicting thoughts underneath, then finally deciding to keep them in (denial?) check, before that "okay" somehow makes it so quietly heartbreaking.
It was a nice touch having Ashley Johnson (the voice of Ellie in the games) playing her Mother.
Brace yourselves, dear viewers, for this episode will undoubtedly spark heated debates among fans. Some will love it, while others will loathe it—much like the game itself.
The Last of Us ends with a masterful coup de grâce, cementing this adaptation's place in the pantheon of prestige television.
It is sombre and dark yet replete with emotions that run deep. Joel, at long last, becomes a man of action. Whether his actions are morally defensible, however, is a subject of endless debate.
Staying true to the game, this episode does not falter in its execution, boasting a master-stroke opening that sets the stage for a gripping narrative to unfold. The strategic use of a flashback adds layers of complexity to already richly-wrought characters, serving as a catalyst for some of the most poignant dialogue between Joel and Ellie to date—dialogue sure to leave the audience teary-eyed.
The action is far from glorified, leaving viewers in a state of visceral shock and awe. The last couple of episodes have served to do some fantastic work for Joel, and this episode is the proverbial cherry on top, truly a beautiful and profound culmination of his character arc. Indeed, the show is a thing of beauty, but beauty that is shrouded in darkness.
Were a flaw to be ascribed, it would be that of brevity. At a mere 40 minutes, the finale feels curtailed. The absence of the Cordyceps is understandable, given the laser-focused narrative, though it marks a deviation from the source material.
By turns harrowing and humane, towering and intimate, this finale buries its hooks deeply in the viewer, capping off a brilliant maiden season. Love it or loathe it, impassioned discourse will assuredly abound in the wake of this uncompromising conclusion to the first chapter of The Last of Us.
01x09 - Look for the Light: 8.5/10 (Great)
Maybe it's just me, but it feels like this episode was a little rushed. The acting (mostly Bella Ramsey) felt less good than in the previous episodes and the honest conversations between Ellie and Joel just didn't feel very sincere and looked a bit awkward. Also, the scenes of Joel going on a killing spree didn't feel as tense and dramatic as it was in TLOU game. Anyway, might just be me.
That episode felt short to me, Still a good episode tho.
Maybe when I get to play the game on the 28th I'll get the giraffe:giraffe: comments
The show was just okay for me. A lot of it was boring. The best was the scenary and effects. I like how they made the main road to Wyoming look old and knackered.
Did they just copy Blade's origin.
Wtf, He's killed hundred people who want world to be saved by sacrificing one stupid kid
As someone who has never played the game, this finale was 80/100 i guess... I mean it was good but something was missing....maybe more zombies...idk maybe some drama. Overall, I'm definitely looking forward towards 2nd season...
How tall was that giraffe? They climbed four flights of stairs and were face to face with it.
Perfect ending to a perfect season and tv show. I was expecting a 90minutes episode but they serve us with a normal length. Loyal to the game and fans, executed with brilliancy, leaves us wanting more. The game did the same 10 or more years ago.
Thank you for never ruining it, and turning one of my favourite games into a future icon for television shows.
I have cried in this episode but my biggest scream was for the opening: Ashley!!!!
i feel it's rushed and last scene should have been scripted in a different way like more romantic talk and a hug joel and ellie cus it looks like the end scene is cutted off , like : swear joel ,I swear lalala the end..tffff
Peak adaptation! Carbon print copy of what happened at the end of the game (TLOU1).
For people who didn't get the hint. Ellie knows it and it will be tackled in the sequel just like what happened in the TLOU2 game.
Man, what I didn't like and hate in this episode was the extension of Elie's mom's background and how she was born, we don't need that info just like in the games where we don't see her mom and how she was born. And the specific why I don't like it is because how the VA Ellie in the game was killed in this version same as the VA of Joel in the last episode this is a clear Neil Druckman influence that guy is so bleak with how he treats the characters of this world like bringing up the VA of the game and ending up to being killed in this one. I F****** hated it, like you can just make them a cameo as a side character without killing them. This is why fans of the TLOU fanbase are split on how they see Druckman and his decision-making. (I'm on the side that hates him to what he did in TLOU2 game) That decision is so dumb where a veteran guy who lived and this world for many years like for more than 20 years (after the catastrophe) and suddenly trusted a bunch of strangers was such out of character from him. That is stupid writing and a dumb decision that he made he shouldn't have established that trait for him in the first game.
Correct me if I'm wrong that pocket knife was a gift from Joel (and not from her Mom) it is why important to Ellie, not from what we get in this version right?
And also Ellie's house (TLOU2 game) made an appearance as an easter egg in this episode for those who are familiar with the game it is where Ellie's mom died in this version.
The episode is not as long as others in the show, and it feels a bit too short for a season finale, it was a bit rushed, and I would have appreciated more time with the characters. We get the backstory of Ellie's birth, and her mum Anna looks pretty badass as she kills an infected while giving birth to her daughter. Anna asks her best friend to take care of the baby - the friend in question turns out to be Marlene. Anna begs her to kill her as she got wounded while fighting the infected, and she will become infected herself. Marlene has her doubts, but eventually does as Anna asked her.
I liked the scenes with Joel and Ellie and their conversations together, bringing some hope to the post-apocalyptic world of Last of Us. The part with the giraffes was great, Ellie seems to have retained some childlike wonder in the world in spite of what has happened to her, though it was obvious she was traumatised by what David did to her. Wildlife seems to take over the world now that civilisation retreated, and this looks like one positive thing about the epidemic. Joel confessing to Ellie that he wanted to kill himself after Sarah's death and that it was Ellie who made him find sense in life again was quite moving, and set the scene for the events later, when both were taken by who turned out to be Marlene's people. This emphasises how much Joel cares for Ellie and how she in a way replaced Sarah in his heart.
When Joel learns that the surgery Ellie is about to undergo will kill her, he makes a bloodbath just to save her from being killed in the process of finding the cordyceps cure. There is an important moral dilemma involved, since the cure might save lots of people if it works, but to Joel it only means that the person he loves will die. I guess it is really hard to make such a decision, but it seems to me that most people would behave like Joel did if saving other people would equal the death of one person they love. You care more about that one person than hundreds of people you don't know.
The end is bittersweet as both Joel and Ellie are alive and escape together, though we as the audience know that there will probably be no cure for cordyceps and so no return to the normal world before the epidemic. Joel lies to Ellie about what really happened at the Fireflies hospital, and she pretends to believe him, but it looks like she guesses the truth and chooses to go along with it. I wonder whether their relationship would change because of it in the next season. We also learn that Ellie had to kill her best friend Riley after the fungus infection developed in her. Overall, the show ends on a sad and melancholic note, with a future where there is no much hope.
Episode felt a bit rushed and/or short.
Still a great show though... Pleasantly surprised.
Great season finale and very true to the game. I was surprised by the short runtime considering this is HBO. The pre-credit scene with Ellie‘s mother played by the OG Ellie Ashley Johnson was done very well and contributed greatly to the story imo. Marlene played by the incredible Merle Dandridge was another highlight of this episode.
10/10
All Gold
Because it stuck
the landing and played out
almost scene for scene
as the games final stages.
Yes I wanted the drowning
scene, yes I wanted the
infected tunnels,
but what we did get was
pure game play right down
to the conversations,
the backdrops,
the clothes and we
even got the iconic
Joel weapon changes
with the actual weapons
of the game so kudos
credits for that, and
for the iconic Giraffes
scenes.
The beginning was
Fcuking awesome
(in Ellie and Dina's
house from TLOU part II)
with Anna- Ashley Johnson (game Ellie)
Because this gave us something that wasn't
from the game it was it's
own back story one that
fans of the game have
always wanted so this
is what gives this episode
Top marks because it
absolutely pulled off the
End game scenes for the
Game fans while adding
Something completely
New and amazing that
was spectacular to see
as a fan and lover of
the game.
For the record I
absolutely fully
Support what Joel did
now that takes
Ultimate Moxie
the guys a fcuking
Legend.
I do not however
Support what comes
next in season 2
absolutely not
and never will,
(Joel would never
ever drop his guard
like that especially to
perfect strangers).
Their is a good chance
I see myself out
now and call it
a one season show for
me because I'll have
no part of what comes
next.
I Fcuking hate both
them
games anyway
(the one in the game
and the game we are
playing it on).
I've no doubt that will
be adapted in S2 but still
lead into same results
so either way I tap-out
now, It would never go down
like that anyway,
it's complete nonsense to
think otherwise.
(just a Piss-poor plot device
to a Garbage story, to the
worst sequel to a game ever made
in the history of games).
and if Neil Druckmann insists
on forging ahead and adapting
the Shit-Show of a story into
season 2 of this show, well
consider this show
dead and buried in season 2,
(it deserves to get cancelled).
The events of TLOU Part II game:
i still see that
shit when I close my eyes,
it was utter bollocks in the
TLOU Part II game and it
will be in TLOU S2 live action show
Verdict: The GOAT
video game to a near perfect
t.v show adaptation.
TLOU Part I
the story is so sad but the show done it beautifully, shout out to all crews for this show, is so incredible!!
dont know if i want to watch season2 tho cuz spoiled from gameplay is gotta be more sadness...
Firstly, that was a perfect cast for the mother. Personally I think they resembles each other.
Secondly, if I was Ellie, I think I would like to know the truth. Both from Marlene and Joel
humans procreating during an apocalypse is the most human thing to do anyway
Stellar episode- due to the backstory but I definitely had to suspend my disbelief at the end.
Probably should have been another like 10ish minutes but it does a good job setting up the second season (for those who know what’s coming). Great ending to a great show. Really enjoyed watching every second of it
I really enjoyed S1 but I have concerns as to where S2 will head. I hope the storylines aren't just a rehash of S1. How many more times will Ellie and Joel narrowly escape the infected, clickers or other nutters before it becomes boring. The whole plot of S1 was that Ellie was the world's only hope for a cure and needed to get to the Firefires. Now that has appeared to have gone what's next? I just hope S2 doesn't become another GOT S8...
Maybe a bit rushed, but overall what a finale on a narrative standpoint. As someone who hasn't played the games, I was shocked by everything that went down here in the best way. I even like how abruptly it ended. Just maybe could have used a more drawn out sequence in the hospital with Joel.
Ellie: On my life, you're telling me the truth about what happened at the hospital.
Joel: Yes.
Absolutely amazing. Many awards to follow I hope.
They did an excellent job with the hospital fight and showing the brutality of Joel's rampage and single mindedness.
They did scene for scene, word for word moments but it still isn't there for me. I'm cursed with having seen it developed and acted to a higher standard. I didn't feel the connection between them or the weight of the bond. And Bella is still terribly expressionless. I'm annoyed to learn they're keeping the casting for season 2. Let's hope she has some time to develop while they're waiting for her to age up a bit more.
Pffff Skyscraper-sized giraffes, and Joel Terminator mode, I don't know how people praise this series
I mean at this point the show’s literally inspiring paradoxes in my mind so it’s sure doing something. Like everyone I’ve been devastated by Joel’s willingness to kill without any sense of humanity, but here, at “I won’t let you take her”, I can’t help but agree with all sides. But actually I just realised I had ours. The doctor went for a scalpel. He’s obviously not a threat. But otoh can we really expect Joel to make that assessment in that short a time? And maybe the real insight is that that’s not a paradox at all; we are often confronted with bad or worse choices, and if your morality elevates purity above all else you’re pretty much fucked in this kind of situation.
I felt like this episode was so rushed ! It supposed to be a big deal and it just happened like that. First episode was 1h20 this one 40min ? Nonsense.
Lots to like in the character work but the video game logic that propels the tedious plot lets it down for TV. I'll be back for s2, but only for the leads, as they're that good.
The camp where the two got captured looked like it was from The Division game, loll
Seeing the thumbnail (thanks I hate it, trakt) I knew what was coming, but that opener was still very good and set the tone for the episode. Brilliant work translating the ambiguity that kinda made the game what it is. The question for me isn't whether Joel did the right thing - he absolutely didn't, twice over if we consider Ellie capable of making such a big decision for herself - the real question is who would be strong enough to make the right decision for a shot at a cure? Trolley problems don't seem so simple now, huh?

holy shit, best new show in years. what a fantastic ride!
