Two episodes in and I’m already convinced by the end of the season this will be regarded in the same vein as GOT, Chernobyl, and Breaking Bad are one of the best shows there ever was. This is some seriously impeccable television.
Please just greenlight the spinoff about the piano-playing frog already!!
Played the game couple of times and before playing the game I never thought a story could be so well told like it was in this game. The story was never about the virus, infected etc. For me that was just a backdrop for the character study that was happening in this story. Father dealing with the grief of losing a daughter, being shell of a human being and just surviving for 20 years, not allowing anyone close to his heart until Ellie comes along.
This adaptation, even though spot on the environment, sound design, character clothing etc, is completely missing in that emotional character study department. I don't mind if the show runners along with Neil are changing the story, adding the backstory, moving in different directions etc as long as they give us that same emotional expressions of characters and bring that connection between characters and the audience to the small screens in form of this TV show. These first two episodes completely missed the mark in that department. Ellie, despite being a scared, smart and respectful 14 year old girl in the game, turned into a "always answering questions with smart ass comments", completely disrespectful 14 year old girl in the show. There are tons of other examples about Ellie, Joel and Tess I could write and mention here but I really don't have the energy.
Even though very well done first two episodes from the production point, it completely missed the mark in my view to present these characters and their struggles from the game to TV screens and get the new comers to the story to feel what players felt when playing the game.
Holy. Camole. So, so good!!! Another dang near perfect episode!! Well done.
This show is showing a ton of promise, the clicker scene was amazing in its terrifyingness. Also, I like the subtle way they do things, no long speeches, no long exposition dumps. When two hardened veterans of this world suddenly seem scared, it tells you all you need to know. Also, the glance at the watch.
Please don't screw this up.
Anyone else hold there breath or forget to breath at certain parts... great show:thumbsup:
HOLY SHIT. The TENSION. They managed to make the clickers even more TERRIFYING!!! And that fucking ending...
"Save who you can save."
Continuing the "ominous mycology" intro trend. Love it.
Those clickers!!! Wow looks so awesome and scary! Can’t believe they look just like in the game if not better!
It went amazingly fast. I did not see that hour go by. What a great episode!
The clicker scene was masterfully translated from video game to live action, the tension was insane! Incredible episode.
The clicking is just as eerie as ever!
Also the set pieces are absolutely gorgeous
Great so far! Everything is perfect: the cast, the setting, the music, the pacing. It's so well done - can't wait for more!
Foreword: never played the game.
I'm starting to notice it's a mandatory disclaimer (as most series "based on"), cause half of the comments are screaming at the miracle, masterpiece and one of the greatest shows ever already.
It looks like some influencer's YouTube comment section ...
So yeah, reviewing it more impartially than that:
the pilot was undeniably great, this was a very good episode, great craft and acting, first-class tension but not more than that.
Not superb as the previous one.
Ellie seemed a little bit Alice in WonderZombieland here, but I mean it in a slightly unrealistic way: I get the "bringing the humanity to a hardened dude" but all the puns seemed to much. The tone of the delivery. Not even as a defense mechanism (which could have worked well), cause she doesn't seem as scared or defensive or not trusting them, as last time.
I enjoyed the way Pascal portrayed Joel slowly beginning to be less suspicious.
That kiss was completely unnecessary, what the fuck.
Sorry. But you still alive in this world and you don’t even know that you always give headshots against these kind of things???
Only second episode in and yet another character is gone, this time someone who seemed to be one of the main protagonists. Joel, Tess and Ellie looked like a little family in the first ep and now there are only two of them. It is a bit of a pity that Tess is gone so soon before we managed to learn something more about her, particularly as she was the one more supportive of Ellie and believed the girl much more than Joel initally did, now that she's sacrificed herself to help them escape, he may follow her last words and try and save Ellie (though maybe it was better for Tess that she died because she didn't turn into a monster after all, and what happened to her proved that Ellie's claims to be immune are true after all).
The introduction with the Indonesian scientist investigating the beginnings of the pandemic were pretty interesting, I hope there story of the pandemic's history would be continued in the next episode, and it would be explained how the fungus spread further? Did they bomb the city and it didn't help to stop the infections or was the scientist's harsh advice not followed? It definitely poses a difficult moral problem whether to sacrifice a city in hope that it might possibly stop the pandemic from spreading to other parts of the world.
The monsters themselves are horrifying and really scary, particularly as "they were men once" to quote Aragorn. I guess it is a fate worse than death for the victims since they are technically alive but lose all that makes them human.
The visuals are very good and the vistas of the post-apocalyptic city - really impressive and it looks like the producers were generous with money for these landscapes. I haven't played the game so the plot is quite engrossing since I have no idea what would happen next (though I guess the main characters won't be killed till the end of the show since they are main characters and the show would end without them).
Another live-action, straight from the game (a few changes here and there but, meh, mostly same, same), winning episode. Between "Ooooh I remember that place!!!" and "yoooo, that looks SO familiar!!!" and yelling "Myceliummmmm Mama!!!" and "THAT IS FUCKING DISGUSTING, SO COOL, EWWW, I LOVE IT!!! (you know the bit wink*wink) - I was having a ball!
They nailed the set and CG re-creation in this one, and if they can keep it up, the series will be a total success.
9.5/10 for surprising me when the credits started rolling, I was fully immersed and expecting more. Good job, I'm hooked.
I think … I THINK … we’re onto something amazing here. If this can keep up this level it’ll be named with the few big ones. I’m still hesitant to give this episode a 10, but it’s a fat feckin’ 9!
YES YES YES! Take your Ring's Of Power and your House Of The Dragon and shove it up someplace dark. This is amazing.
First clicker apearance and YES it felt just like the game, bide your time until you can't avoide them and strike. Joel needs to work on his aim though, but remember we just started playing. Loved Ellie crouching behind Joel just like in the game!
Screw all the assholes downplaying Bella Ramsey just because she's not as pretty as in-game Ellie. She has absolutely everything else going for her and she's doing a great job along with the rest of the cast.
Just imagine if The Walking Dead had been on HBO. This is more of the same. I never played the game so I don't have anything to compare it to other than the fact that zombie media is very played out, and this isn't even a particularly interesting example so far.
Groundbreaking for games, maybe, but not for TV. Monsters sound scarier than they look, which is like the time travelling testicle from Rick and Morty.
Marks added for the performances and the undeniably great HBO production design.
the kiss scene was dumb. it didn't make sense
After this episode, I claim that this series is GOATED for video game adaptations for this kind of media.
Anna Torv was excellent in her role she better be nominated for next year's award season. Bella Ramsey was fantastic in her role even without playing the game she just bring Ellie's character to life. The clickers actors also deserve the credit for bringing those things alive, and for the first time, Neil Druckmann as a director in this medium did a great job. But I still and will not forget and forgive on what Happened in Part 2 for Joel.
Just like the pilot, the opening scene was the best thing of the entire episode.
It’s fine I guess. Better than the first insanely long “episode”. It bugged me that they explained that the fungus can communicate over long distance but to tell Ellie that infected is blind was not relevant until they were attacked? This kind of forced tension is annoying. With that said it’s not bad, but it really isn’t the best thing ever either. I also guess I’m not that interested in post-apocalyptic fiction. Either they live or they don’t, the world is still fucked-up.
Intense! Goosebumps all over from beginning to the end. I loved the atmosphere and the perfectly captured Clickers. To be honest, I just loved everything about this episode.
Clickers. Fucking Clickers.
Those fuckers are scary AF.
Also, Joel's delicate glance at his watch hurt so much.
Another stellar episode. Definitely a step down from the first episode, but that was pretty much a given due to how emotionally devastating and perfect the first 30 minutes of that episode were. But yeah, with or without knowledge of the game, this is fantastic television, and this episode proves that the first episode wasn't just a one-time thing. It seems we're getting a whole season of this fantastic material, and I can barely contain my joy.
Really good episode. The clicker sounds were quite authentic.
I've had one show at the top of my list as my favorite show of all time for over a decade now. If this show keeps going the way it's going, I could see that changing. Which would be appropriate, given that this game has remained at the top of my favorite games list for a decade as well.
Yeah so this show rocks
a little slow but that's the feel of the game and the best way to tell this story so great
Continuing on Joel and Ellie's journey, we take a new approach with showing the history of the virus and how it grows proving to be more terrifying than imagined. Also, the clickers look phenomenal! HBO's money is paying off in special effects.
(578-word review) It's understandable, albeit unrelatable, how those who haven't played through/seen the game would have a perspective that enables them to find each episode phenomenal: generally, and because of the novelty/lack of source material knowledge. In contrast, those who have played through/seen the game will have the same outlook but because of the adaptation aspect's faithfulness (so far).
Based on what I've seen, what I consider overselling continues, with people blown away. Like they've never seen anything better. That'll likely remain the case with every episode, making me feel like the odd one out for each one due to not being in a trace of worship towards everything this show presents. Fair enough. You do you. I'm not here to tell you how to feel.
As far as this episode is concerned, it was similar to its original counterpart. Same as the premiere. That's a good sign. The production design/value stood out a ton, especially compared to the first episode; the lighting did a lot of the work throughout its entirety. That was my main takeaway.
Everyone else, from both the non-gamer and gamer sides, will likely be focused on the action sequence and the ending. In some ways, those things warrant more of that blown-away, 10/10 ratings across-the-board reaction than the premiere.
But for me, those two things were decent. Not phenomenal. Not 'the greatest thing I've ever seen.' Not how and however most people will put it. I was indifferent during the action sequence concerning the aspects of tension and suspense, and I've seen the game, meaning the ending was logically impactful instead of emotionally impactful; I've never been one to get emotional in that way, though.
Performance and acting-wise, I'll admit that the ending was somewhat "hard-hitting" by Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey. In a broader sense, Pedro seemed more in tune with Joel; he sounded more Texan/similar to Troy Baker's Joel, especially.
Due to this being the second episode (no introduction elements of the premiere) and more screen time, Bella seemed even more like Ellie, attitude-wise. But I still feel a lack of proper Ellie vibes from her, though; that may not change.
At least my biggest gripe from the premiere regarding the lack of chemistry between her and Pedro, especially compared to Nico Parker and Pedro, has gotten a little better. I'm expecting that to be continual/evolving throughout the season as Joel and Ellie get closer.
Overall, this was a decent one, just like the first one. Nothing more, nothing less. Controversial opinion. The first half of the premiere gave it an edge this episode's entirety didn't surpass. It did have better/more appreciating visuals; I will say that. The opening scene went on for too long, though. Nearly 10 minutes, and seemingly for no bigger purpose, too. It couldn't have been to mention the bombing alternative, as we learn about that a second time with Joel, Tess, and Ellie; perhaps it's the easy-to-gloss-over tidbit regarding the flour and grain factory. Still too long, though.
And if I remember correctly, the ending was a pivotal moment in the game, and I know from the Wikipedia section of this show: "Critics overwhelmingly considered the third episode the season's best, and some named it among the greatest episodes of television overall."
My expectations for the next episode are a little higher than usual, which will likely come back and bite me in the ass; shame on me in advance.
This is a 10/10 show. Now we get to see the action dynamics translated to the screen and they are incredible. The scenarios, the clickers, the conversation where masterful. And for the fans, the new elements of the story and the “small changes” are just perfect.
Interesting that they made Ellie be bitten again. I liked how they changed Tess's death - such a creepy way to die!! - though I would have liked to see FEDRA being seen as almost as bad as the infected just like the game. I love being able to recognise places in the show from the game, it makes it an entire different experience.
oh Tess...she's a good person
So we just have to assume those zombies have super hearing right? I'm not complaining, it's just a tad silly.
Hour went by... Solid second episode. :)
This is entertainment on the highest level possible. Incredibly well done episode that continues to stay very faithful to the game‘s storyline. They just nailed the look of everything. From the locations to the clickers, everything just looks so fantastic.
8/10
Great
The Little details in the
show are frickin
spectacular actually:
"Sarah didn't make the
pancakes
in the morning
because she forgot the mix.
Joel didn't eat the biscuits
the neighbours offered
him because he was on
Atkins. Sarah didn't eat
the cookies because they
were raisin instead of
chocolate chip.
and Joel forgot the cake".
(Imagine not making
it because you unknowingly
ate some fcuked up
bread wow).
Think about how this
episode started-
A FLOUR AND GRAIN
FACTORY ON THE
WEST SIDE OF THE
CITY.
"Mind Blown"
thoughts during ep2
this ep was fantastic. Shout outs especially to Christin Hakim playing Dr. Pertiwi in the first scene and Anna Torv as Tess. The emotional nuances of those performances and how they highlight the importance of sacrifice and Saving who you can save were just amazing.
“The Last of Us” continues to impress with its second episode, delivering an hour of tense and emotional television that stays true to the source material.
From the captivating performances of the cast to the highly engaging storytelling, it’s not hard to see why this series has quickly become a favourite.
Picking up right where the premiere left off, it delivers on the promise set by the series premiere. From start to finish, a roller-coaster ride of emotion, action, and suspense that will have you on the edge of your seat.
Pascal captures Joel’s gruffness and cynicism but with hints of his hidden vulnerability and guilt. While still a little rough around the edges, Ramsey portrays Ellie’s curiosity and sassiness well but lacks the much-needed vulnerability.
The writing remains strong, weaving together multiple storylines in an engaging fashion. It’s full of heart-wrenching moments that tug at the heartstrings and thrilling action sequences that keep the adrenaline pumping.
The score is haunting. The visuals and sound design bring the environment to life, creating a captivating sense of dread and tension. Neil Druckmann’s direction also deserves praise, making great use of the camera to create visually stunning and effective emotional moments. The pacing is also spot on, building tension and suspense in a slow, yet compelling manner and delivering a powerful climax.
The scenes of Boston in ruins are stunningly detailed and bleak. It does not shy away from showing the brutality and gore of this world. Still, it does not revel in it, using violence to illustrate the harshness of survival and the moral dilemmas that come with it, but not glorifying it.
The showrunners Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann have clearly done their homework, as they expertly capture the essence of the game’s characters, settings, and story.
With just two episodes under its belt, it’s already one of the best shows on television. A thrilling and emotional ride that leaves you wanting more. A must-see for anyone who loves great television.
01x02 - Infected: 8.5/10 (Great)
Second episode was okay. I liked seeing how a city looked after so many years. The SFX are lifelike. I am not too happy with Ellies attire. The two adults both have coats on, Ellie has a coat but is not wearing it and has her 'jumper' unzipped. I have this 'fear' of experiencing an apocalypse and not having appropriate clothing on. I dread not having my boots on. Sometimes I wear trainers!
Why does Ellie have to swear so much?
the world is so big, it feels like a PS4 game at times, cinematic
Not sure if I had picked this actress to play Ellie
Simply amazing this episode, from beginning to end
A strong second episode. I'm enjoying the intros providing a flash to the past. Glad that it's not interspersed with the episodes themselves though.
It's really enjoyable to recognise locations and moments from the game. The clicker encounter was especially well done. My heart was beating so fast! They captured the terror very well. A hard thing to do when you can't experience what you did in game (dying to them if you make a mistake) in the TV format. There are no redos here so it's a good way to demonstrate their strength.
Something about the movement of their arms felt too human still which is jarring.
Knew ahead of time that they were going for these 'tendrils' rather than the spores but the interconnected system and the 'writhing on the ground' infected was unexpected. Not sure I like it to be honest but will see how it plays out in the bigger picture.
So they're hitting the notes with the writing for Ellie but Bella still isn't for me personally. Her face is very wooden/expressionless which is doing a disservice to the show. The moments where we're meant to see subtlety (like saying she was alone when bit) felt so exaggerated she may as well wink at the camera.
Anna Torv was a treat as Tess and I can see why they played her death out with infected rather than the game version. The tendril kiss thing was weird af though and not the vibe.
You can tell they're trying to capitalise on viral moments people will talk about online, hooking in those general masses that think Game of Thrones was the best thing in the world etc. Even the opening credits seem like an homage to it.
A shame as this could benefit from more subtly and doing is own thing but money is what talks so I get it.
Tess in the game pulled off more of an emotional acting ability.
Really not liking the actress of Ellie even after two episodes. Hope they can recast for season 2.
Not as good as the first episode. It went by quickly but I didn’t feel terribly engaged or tense. Hopefully it’s just setting up more story to unpack.
This whole fungi zombie thing is so next-level. A major step up from your standard zombies, with so many added layers. The way it’s like a connected hive mind. Super creepy. I kinda feel like it’s more “body snatchers” than zombies tbh.
I’m interested in how this infection works. Is the disgusting tentacle “kiss” any more effective than a bite? Do they even do the same thing? And the infected people are always still alive, right? And once they’re dead they’re dead? Like this isn’t a reanimated corpse kinda thing? I have so many questions.
Lastly, Anna Torv is such a talent. I can wait to see her in more.
HBO doesn't disappoint us !!
That's is epic!! likeee wtffff they really have done great job in turning this part into Live action!!
Seems I'm gonna give a lot of 10 Rate to this series
let's keeeep going
* What an ending.
* Favorite and scariest/most chilling part of this episode - the Indonesian professor telling the general to start bombing the city and everyone in it.
* Entire clicker scene was a masterclass in suspense.
The set design is fantastic, that alone really puts a huge divide between it and other similar zombie shows. Pedro is solid, Bella I'm still not a huge fan but she was better this episode,

Wow. What an episode - some cool things
-Absolutely nailed the clickers. Holy shit. Executed perfectly and SO scary.
-Soundtrack was amazing but what else can we expect.
-Love the change in Tess’s death.
-The creaking door when they left the initial room was a clicker sound. And there were a lot of fake outs with creaking and clicking building to the clicker encounter and it was masterfully done.
-So many gameplay call backs. Lifting Tess up, bandaging themselves, unpacking their bags etc
-There was a stuffed giraffe in the debris!
-The change to making the cordyceps an entire network is freaky. Loved that was who surrounded Tess compared to the soldiers in the game.
-Most revolting kiss in tv history
