The Goode Family is another animated, family sitcom from Mike Judge - think King of the Hill, only with liberal caricatures.
The show begins poorly, but does get better toward the end - which is almost sad, seeing as how there is only one season.
While there are good moments, when you are merely working from a premise consisting of "progressive liberals sure are funny," the joke gets old fast. I can understand why this was canceled so quickly, given the fact that it's walking a line of laughing at, and laughing with an eco-conscious, leftwing family. At times it's too far on one side to appeal to right-wingers, then it will drift well past the other line. Who is this for, centrists who know enough to get the jokes, but not too much to understand why the rest of the writing doesn't make sense?
I think what this show needed was an Addams-Family approach where the Goodes are viewed as weird by their surrounding community, while never picking up on that, and seeing everyone else as strange.
I'll break down the family: Gerald, the father, is what you would get if you asked Alex Jones to describe a male democrat.
Helen, the mother, is a compulsive liar, and has a pathological need for acceptance. Their son, Ubuntu, is just dumb... that's it, that's his gimmick - I get the sense his personality started, and stopped with the joke of "wouldn't it be funny if they adopted an African baby, but he was white?" Finally, we have Bliss, the daughter, she is the only consistently-likable character... she's just a normal teen girl.
Okay, so the real issue is how do you make a show about stereotypes funny, and find an audience? There were definitely moments where this was accomplished, and it was by the parents being put in situations where they were trying to be morally righteous, only to then have it backfire - the graffiti episode was a perfect example.
Overall, the show was mediocre. Coincidentally, just like the family themselves, I believe the writers had good intentions, but didn't know enough about what they were lampooning to have the jokes work. Yes, I get it, Whole Foods is expensive. Yes, virtue signaling is an epidemic on the woke left - be it conscious or unconscious. The trouble, yet again, how do you have a family who are so committed to democratic ideals, while simultaneously not knowing what they are? Case in point: in an episode involving a troublesome adopted animal - named Gutter Ball - Helen asks a vet to euthanize him, later, Gerald suggests giving him to a zoo - really? but they're vegan, so they would not suggest that. On the other side of the spectrum, their is an episode where Gerald eats meatless chili only to find out it contains chicken, because the chef doesn't understand the difference; see, that's funny. Vegans can relate to carnists thinking fish, and chicken aren't meat. It does raise the question of why the chili would be advertised as such in the first place, but whatever, I can roll with that.
I think the show had potential, but the writing held it back from being able to convey a message, while still being funny, like The Simpsons or South Park.

A certain type of people would get so offended at this and try to cancel it. Timeless classic now.
