Delving into childhood trauma is something we see all the time in TV, but I like that we got to see this part of Danny’s life as it adds a lot of context to the person he turned out to be. It felt necessary to include it in this show and I thought they did it in a way that evoked the horrors of abuse but didn’t dwell on them unnecessarily. We know how damaged Danny is and here we see part of why that is.
I was truly so horrified to watch the events unfold in this episode. I am thankful they didn't show any child abuse. Danny needed protecting but instead he is failed by adults at every possible interval. They did a great job of hinting at the barn situation, rather than showing anything. The fact that what Danny remembers from the abuse is him playing with fireflies. The way they showed disassociation like this, such an accurate description in response to something so traumatic.
Adam is a personality , and I think Danny kills all his personalities when they’ve served their purpose or over extended their use.
What I'm curious about is how Marlin and Danny's mother met. Usually a pedophile will choose a woman knowing they have vulnerable children. It seemed like Marlin picked his mother before even knowing this about her. Also, there’s definitely something profoundly wrong with his bio dad.
