[6.3/10] I struggled to get into this one. I do like that the show is introducing new teen heroes now, with none other than Wil Wheaton, who’s familiar with playing teen prodigies, at the mic to voice Aqualad. But the story and conflict here didn’t do much for me. Yet again, we get a really basic story of Beast Boy thinking that going underwater will mean his time to shine, only to be upstaged by Aqualad, thereby starting a rivalry between them.
There’s nothing wrong with that premise, but as usual, the show doesn’t really develop it beyond that basic idea. There’s a few gags about telepathic communication while the rest of the gang gets their submarine fixed and the Big Damn Heroes moment. But for the most part, this is just Beast Boy and Aqualad bickering with an underwhelming villain in the self-duplicating Trident. If you’re a fan of underwater action, this one has you covered, but otherwise this is an ironically surface-level treatment of what could be a solid idea for an episode.
