Super Pumped is a sleek series about the rise of Uber, with a top notch cast led by Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Travis Kalanick. He is surrounded by ageless Elizabeth Shue as his mom, charismatic Kyle Chandler as the VC Bill Gurley, and my favorite actress from Halt and Catch FireKerry Bishe as Austin Geidt, Uber's employee #4. Add snappy narration by Quentin Tarantino what can go wrong?
While this pilot episode moves breezily and tells a compelling story, I couldn't help but feel a sense of déjà vu -- a protagonist overcomes near-impossible odds but becomes one of the biggest a-holes in the process. Yes, we all know that Kalanick and his followers become insanely rich. But they do so at the expense of creating toxic work culture, breaking and bending many laws, becoming one of the most beloved, then one of the most criticized companies in the last 10 years.
How the series will navigate this story remains to be seen. But I am entertained enough for the next few episodes.
