RIP Lt Joe Carey…

I know they tried to make his tragic death have an emotional impact but I think it was a miss. This guy had been on the show since the beginning, but he hasn't really had any lines in a while. It was pretty obvious that he was going to be killed when you saw he was going on the away mission. Classic Star Trek. Poor guy was so close to home.

Solving the planetary disaster was a bit too easy.

This show has incredibly predicting patterns. 6x08 One Small Step was a decent episode, so they try the basic recipe again: dangerous space archaeology.

This episode has much potential. It's also about the repercussions of human space exploration. Its Armageddon/nuclear winter setting is intriguing. Paris "Judgement of Solomon" scene is heartbreaking. The way they care about the problems is heart-warming. All that said, I don't really like this episode. It's supposed to be a global disaster and all you see is a cheap chamber play.

Very interesting seeing the effect of our supposed good natured attempts at friendship. It’s never a bad thing to remind of us of the potential negative even good intentions can have. This also parallels the episode of voyager stuck in the system of that planet who moved in time at a faster rate. They got to see how them just being there caused the civilization to push themselves in advancement which was positive.

The episode summary doesn’t quite match tho or maybe I missed who modified the technology. I thought this species saw the technology and tried to mimic it.

It's a great idea for a story, although not entirely original. Space 1999 did an episode where an Earth probe destroyed a planet with it's propulsion system called a Queller Drive. Probably not many here remembering that one.
But like I said, great idea. We're shooting so many stuff into space and it is safe to assume we'll keep doing so. Who knows what this could do. The question what exploration is worth in terms of sacrifices is valid.
I think bringing Carey back for this episodes was a bit of a cheat as it was only done to provoke an emotional reaction from the viewer upon him being killed. A no name crew member would not have provided that.

So why does Voyager have to be in the atmosphere to use photon torpedoes? This has never been a requirement in any Star Trek before. We have seen all sorts of planet saving endeavours without the ship being in the atmosphere. This makes no sense.
