[9.1/10] Such a classic. One of my absolute favorite modes of this show is SpongeBob’s exuberance and excitement annoying Squidward to no end. Just the contrast between Squidward’s sullen despondency and SpongeBob over-excited enthusiasm for working the overnight shift makes for a lot of hilarious bits.

But things pick up even further when Squidward tries to scare his square-pantsed coworker. The ghost story he tells is amusingly improvised, with SpongeBob’s frightened reaction being particularly amusing (replete with his uproarious inability to say “Hash-Slinging Slasher”). There’s a lot of great and inventive animation here, with SpongeBob’s budding arms and “at night” sequence, and some really nice framing, like how Squidward is “shot” from below to make him seem scarier and more imposing when he’s telling the story.

Plus, the ending where Squidward thinks his made up tale of horror is coming true, only to see a friendly fry cook applicant, is the fun sort of comic escalation this show thrives on. And the nonsequitor ending with Nosferatu is the sort of lunacy the series does really well.

Overall, this is just an eleven-minute dose of hilarious, scary fun.
