[7.7/10] This is a somewhat dated, but still fun episode. The idea of Kingpin and The Insidious Six vs. Red Skull Jr. and Silver Sable & The Wild Pack, with Spider-Man caught in the middle, makes for some fun conflicts and set pieces. Spider-Man roaming around Russia and trying to solve a mystery with Robbie makes for a good spine to the episode. And I even like the macguffin of a box containing info that would both guide someone to how to use a doomsday device in New York City and that would clear the names of Peter’s parents.
As convoluted as the setup was in the last episode, I like that Peter’s still trying to get to the bottom of what happened with his parents, and while there’s something convenient about Robbie having an old reporter friend who can connect him with the people who knew Peter’s folks, and Peter finds the missing scientist’s daughter who just happened to be present for an important conversation the Parkers and her dad, it’s a reasonably clear and satisfying answer to the ungainly mystery of the last episode.
Plus, I like Spider-Man being resistant to Silver Sable a mercenary, but finding some understanding that who someone is really working for can be a little more complicated than it seems given what happened with his parents.
More than anything, this is just a lot of good rumbles, with an all-star cast of villains against Spidey and some colorful new heroes making for a lot of entertaining skirmishes. Kingpin vs. Red Skull Jr. turns out to be a lot of fun, and Spidey’s wisecracks were particularly enjoyable here.
Overall, a very entertaining episode that makes good on some less-than-great elements from the prior episode.
