[4.3/10] Hoo boy was this one a dud. Blatant, painful exposition all over the place. The show had to bend over backwards to try to explain and account for all the insanity and stuff it had barely set up for this one. Mysterio is a cool villain, but he’s kind of wasted here, and the efforts to develop him are rushed and unsatisfying. Having an actress who seemingly perished in Mysterio’s stunt gone wrong turn out to be a cyborg who wants to steal Mary Jane’s body is too out there, even for Spider-Man: TAS. And everything that happens is super convenient.
That’s also without mentioning the kind of awkward message of the episode that it’s okay to lie to people to give them hope to keep them from feeling bad. I’m not saying that sort of thing is always wrong -- there’s complicated situations out there -- but it’s probably too complicated a concept to address in a show aimed at kids with a dizzying array of exploding robots. Oh, and Mary Jane gets suckered in by the image of her dad again.
The one good part of this is Spider-Man fighting his robotic foes. I’m a sucker for royal rumble-esque villain fights, so having Spidey have to take on robo versions of his rogues gallery in sequence is entertaining. But that’s really all this episode has going for it.
Overall, an eminently skippable, turd of an episode.
