[8.3/10] Fun episode. The cold open with Democratic presidential candidates was a mixed bag, but the celebrity cameos were fun, and Kate McKinnon as Warren was especially amusing. And in terms of other political material, this was one of the best Weekend Updates in a while, as both the anchors’ punchlines were on point, the teenage vlogger character from Heidi Gardner was very funny, and Pete Davidson’s usual schtick was enjoyable.
The Little Miss Teacher’s Friend skit had a well-observed specificity and craziness to it that I really liked. Similarly, I loved the old Folk Singer skit, which both found a way to perfectly spoof old folk songs, A Mighty Wind style, and to make their song increasingly absurd and comically ridiculous.
I’ll admit, having never done Soul Cycle, I didn’t really get many of the jokes, but the skit had a fun energy that carried the day. And the father/son podcasting mics was a one-joke sketch, but it was short and amusing enough.
The only real dud was the old italian grandparents skit, which had a weak, broad vibe to it that never really clicked. The last skit of the night, “Dog Court” had the comic unpredictability of live animals and some silly gags with the “dog jury” that came together for one of those off the wall but very entertaining bits.
The piece de resistance, though, was the “Grouch” skit, as the mix of Sesame Street with a gritty, Joker-style origin story was the perfect comic mash-up.
Overall, almost every part of this one clicked, and a couple of sketches knocked it out of the park. Great episode on the whole.
