I enjoyed what I saw of the original Samurai Jack cartoon, but it wasn't quite the follow-up from the first episode I wanted. Despite the awesome stylised visuals and excellent robo-gore, it was a bit more of a typical episodical Cartoon Network show than I was hoping. However, the season 5 reboot was the exact kind of dark story I was after. It's surprisingly violent and mature, breaking apart the Hero's Journey and focusing on Jack escaping the neverending cycle of trying to beat the invincible bad guy before reaching a satisfying conclusion. Plus, the balance of the humour against the more serious elements is handled much better here, in my opinion.
No disrespect to the original show, there's a reason that it has the following it does, but this season is the quintessential Samurai Jack for me.
