As a life-long fan of Archie Comics... the classic and modern.. I completely enjoyed this. I don't understand why people think it is soooo far fetched for Riverdale to be a bit darker. Have you never heard of "Archies Weird Mysteries" or "Afterlife with Archie". Compared to "Afterlife", Riverdale is completely wholesome... At least Jughead isn't a zombie. I think this is a creative modern retelling directed toward a young adult audience. But also, because of how far back this franchise reaches (1939), it is nostalgic for older audiences. I am 36 and loved every minute of it, so did my mom and her boyfriend (he just turned 70). I think some critics here are being a bit harsh... this is a teen drama based on a comic based on teens... this is NOT Shakespeare! Get off your high horse, let this show be the light entertainment it is meant to be and go watch NCIS or something more intellectual. So far I love how they've taken characters created in the 30's and brought them into 2017. I am happy they've diversified the characters a bit more (again, 1939 and very white-washed). And if they wanna get a bit magical and bring Sabrina in.... GO FOR IT! Anyway, some people should just figure out that they are not the target audience and move on... let the rest of us enjoy what is turning out to be a fun series.
Would be so much more natural if they were college sophomores instead of HS sophomores. I don't get this obsession of getting 20 something actors to play high school kids. No one is buying it. Specially with the ridiculous amount of make up some of the actresses are wearing.
And of course we have all the clichéd tropes!
* The naive, blonde, good girl
* The token gay BFF
* The rich, sassy, bitchy girl
* The football playing, attractive golden boy (who is also sensitive I'm kinda having HSM flash backs)
* The young, hot teacher (who had an illicit affair with one of her underage students)
* The entitled, sociopathic cheerleader captain
* The disapproving, impossible to please parents
I couldn't concentrate on a single word of the closet conversation. OMG what the f was up with Archie's hair?! Holy crap! Also, Veronica's good girl act didn't last long at all. When you're told in no uncertain terms that the girl you're trying to befriend is gaga over a boy, you should not, under any circumstances, make out with said boy. That's like, Girl Code rule #1.
Why would everyone and their parents go watch as the dead guy's body was being bagged up and taken away?
I really enjoyed this first episode, but considering it's airing on The CW I'm worried this will rather turn into one of my guilty pleasures instead of actually being good...
But that speech at the end by Archie just annoyed me. He slept with one of his teachers, can't keep his eyes off her and made out with Veronica - At this point he shouldn't even try the "You're too perfect and I'm not enough" approach. Just be honest that you're not interested in her, Jesus Christ.
Knew absolutely nothing about the show going in. Did not enjoy. Wasn’t the worst thing I’ve ever watched, but it certainly wasn’t great. I’ll give it another few episodes before giving a final verdict, but so far my thoughts are that it’s basically just another generic teen drama with not-so-great acting and a generic plot that’s trying its best to seem mysterious.
The sign reads "Welcome to Riverdale, the town with pep!", but that may actually be an overstatement. As a matter of fact, there is very little pep to be found here. It all looks and feels ominous and gloomy. Much like the teen angst that is affecting its main characters. Once we're introduced to this seemingly peaceful small town, we are immediately told that not everything is as it seems. We then proceed to trail the Blossom twins, Cheryl (Madelaine Petsch) and Jason (Trevor Stines), an odd pair of gingers, all dressed in white, as they make their way to a local river for an early morning boat ride. Sounds incestuous? It isn't. Just a few moments later, tragedy strikes as Jason Blossom falls into the river and disappears. It's becoming more interesting, isn't it? Well, don't keep your hopes up. In fact, this mystery, which should be at the heart of this episode, is quickly relegated to being a mere backdrop in the lives of Archie Andrews (KJ Apa), Betty Cooper (Lili Reinhart) and Veronica Lodge (Camila Mendes), three high school sophomore students on the verge of discovering who they are and what they want out of life. Or is it "who" they want out of life? It doesn't really matter. What matters is the teen romance and the heartache. This is what we've come to expect from a CW teen soap opera, these days, isn't it? Regardless, some of the creative choices kept it interesting for me, such as choosing Forsythe "Jughead" Jones (Cole Sprouse) to be the narrator of this story, even though we are only introduced to this character at the very end of the episode. I was also into the whole retro vibe, which is clearly an homage to the old Archie comics. There was one scene, in particular, that I really enjoyed, which was an argument between Archie and his father, Fred Andrews (Luke Perry), while standing on their front porch, where they discuss the importance of honesty and truth on the road to becoming the best version on oneself. It was probably one of the best character-building conversations I've seen on the small screen and, in some weird cosmic sense, made me feel that Luke Perry was always meant to play this role. Altogether, "The River's Edge" turned out to be a pretty decent start to this teen drama. It was well written by the series developer, Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, proficiently directed by Lee Toland Krieger, who currently seems to be the go-to guy for pilot episodes, having previously directed the premieres for both Happyland (2014) and Beyond (2017), and brilliantly scored by Blake Neely. It was also properly edited and boasts a few great moments, including a fair amount of pop culture references and the occasional nod to cult television shows that keep the source material fresh, interesting and relatable to its target audience. Let's see where it goes from here.
Well, after watching the first episode of Riverdale, I don't quite know what to think of it all yet. Riverdale seems to be more heavily influenced by the CW's style turning this into more of a darker mystery driven show than I had been anticipating. We'll see how everything shakes out as the first episode already had its hands full just introducing the myriad of characters here. Honestly, I think that they might have overdone it trying to jam too many characters into the opening episode. I really liked what was done in the recent Archie comic reboot but perhaps this mystery-story based approach is better suited for TV vs the lighter affair of the comics.
All that I know is that we need... more Jughead!!
I have no idea where this show will go, but I hope the fact that a teacher had a sexual relationship with Archie is treated more seriously than it being a simple taboo. Right now it has the feeling as if they had a normal affair - scandalous, but nothing more. But they said Archie is a sophomore... meaning he's 15 or 16. That's just straight-up pedophilia. It would not be presented with even the remotely same tone if the genders were flipped. Yay for double standards.
Was thinking how similar to 13 Reasons Why this was feeling, and then the Asian guy from that show appeared. Lol
Why was it cold? It should be like late August or early September, if the school year is only just beginning.
Why would multiple families come to watch a dead teenager be taken out of the lake? What the hell?
I will never forgive Riverdale for casting a non-redhead in the role of one of the most famous gingers in pop culture history. Aside from that, though, this is one of the most immaculately cast shows I've ever seen, led by an indecently good central duo in Camila Mendes and Lili Reinhart.
I've never read any of the Archie Comics, but this show is super up there for me as far as guilty pleasures go considering I'm 24 years old.
Just watched the first ep and i like it fine. I am guessing it is too hyped up?
Feels like a Teen drama, probably has PLL vibes to it? I don't know but it's not bad for a first episode. Will be watching more, hopefully. (I did not read the comics.)
Seems like an overrated show to me. Generic and it just doesn't feel like Archie. It's definitely isn't the best show out there and I know plenty of others that deserve more attention than this. A little cheesy too. Like a basic high school drama.
I hate backstabbing friends. Haaaaate it. HA-TE IT! HAAAAAAAAAAAAAATE IIIIIIIIIIIT. And here you don't have one but TWO! And this is only the first episode. Though I'm still going to keep watching this. Apparently I'm a masochist. Stop me, Rebeca!
Came for the Pussycats, left cause they ruined the Pussycats and the rest of the show sucked too. Didn't finish the ep.

The actress playing Betty reminds me of Brittany Murphy.
