RIPLEY 2024

Andrew Scott is the sixth actor to portray Tom Ripley on film, after Alain Delon in Purple Noon (1960), Dennis Hopper in The American Friend (1977), Matt Damon in The Talented Mr. Ripley (1999), John Malkovich in Ripley's Game (2002), and Barry Pepper in Ripley Under Ground (2005).

So If you want it in color or movie format, there are your many choices. If you want it in B&W or TV, this is it.

ripley is an absolutely stunning piece of cinematography. also puzzling how some are bothered by the fact that its not in color, and using it as the sole reason to shit on it. the light, always the light.

Andrew Scott delivers a compelling portrayal of Tom Ripley, capturing his neurotic and disturbing essence with precision. While the series spans 8 hours, allowing for a deeper exploration of Patricia Highsmith's story, some pacing issues arise in later episodes. Nonetheless, the atmospheric black-and-white cinematography, slow pace, and dark humour contribute to its distinctiveness.

In contrast to the 1999 film, the series offers a richer portrayal of Tom's backstory as a New York grifter. Despite deviations in plot details, the core theme of Tom's envy of Dickie Greenleaf remains intact.

The decision to shoot in black and white adds to its film noir ambience, with Scott's performance reminiscent of Mads Mikkelsen's in "Hannibal." Despite its slow burn, the series effectively develops characters and maintains high production standards, making it a standout adaptation of Highsmith's work.

Excellent. I was afraid that the choice to be in black and white was pretentious nonsense, but it doesn't distract at all. Five minutes in and you forget it's in black and white. It also looks gorgeous and the way the black and white is graded may be the reason. I'm not sure it would look as good in color. The only negative thing that I could say about the show is that you can't watch it and do something else. There are long stretches without any dialogue and much of the movie is in Italian. I usually find it dstracting when English movies have the characters speak a language other than English. I would prefer that the imaginary people only pretend to speak a foreign language. In this case though, they use the foreign language to show Tom's character progression. His lack of ability to speak Italian at the beginning of the show and his fluency at the end tells you something about the character. This is just well done, and I hope that they adapt the next book Riply Underground.

Making it in B&W. Why? It isnt clever or cool, just annoying.

Beautifully shot but immensely tedious to watch

Director is trying so hard to get the art deco feel across to the audience, the snippets of camerawork and editing feels like surgery with a spoon.

Possibly one of my new favorite series of all time. Stunning black and white cinematography. All episodes post-episode 4 are top tier television, in my opinion; highly reminiscent of the artistry of Hitchcock's thrillers.

You know the nightmare you have where it’s all shadowy and dodgy, and you’re trying to escape, or hide, from something you’ve done, and you wake up realising the nightmare was an exaggeration of some past sin…

Well, Ripley is the nightmare. Ripley is the thing that Emerald Fennell wished Saltburn could be.

Absolutely great cinematography, a true gift to our eyes. Magnificent soundtrack and a very dark and mysterious atmosphere. Some scenes felt "too much" (well he get hits by the boat and then the propeller and still is able to continue) but otherwise loyal to the book. Also, so many stairs. So so many! Maybe we could create a whole episode if we add every stairs scene in these series! I also didn't like the cast AT ALL. Dickie was an absolute failure, missing the charm and elegance of Law's Dickie. Marg... And finally Freddie. WTF people? Freddie was not likeable, he was a fox. The actor they picked, naaahhh. Overall it was a nice series to watch

Travel through the black and white lighting as you burrow your way down old Italy Medieval areas and passageways trying to relate to a disturbingly unpredictable character as he moulds and discovers his unpredictable personality before you! Brilliant!

The most valuable aspects about this series are the splendid black and white photography, the shots, the almost perfect settings of 1960s Italy and the remarkable performances of Andrew Scott and Dakota Fanning. As for the script, Ripley's cunning is truly unlikely, especially for a work of fiction characterized by great attention to detail and realism. His ability to so systematically and effectively deceive virtually every other character on the show is truly a stretch. Moreover, the comparison with Caravaggio's life is quite pretentious. All in all, it remains an enjoyable TV series, essentially for the setting and photography.

I was illegally streaming this television show from a website and half of the show is spoken in Italian and there were no subtitles available.

I thought it was well done. Not sure why it's being shit on so much for just being black and white. I liked the old timey look since it was set in the 1960s. Overall, I enjoyed it and it was stressful watching him maneuver through all the lies.

I went with low expectations and I was pleasantly surprised. A bit streched to reach the 8 episodes but other than that quite captivating.Love the Black and white cuz it pissed off the GenZ! OBVIOUSLY, It wouldn't be a Netflix production without WOKENESS hence the WOMAN portraying FREDDIE . I will deduct 1 point for that so RATE: 6/10

I really enjoyed this series. It's got a bit of dark humour and a story that never drags on. It's only 8 episodes so it's easy to binge it in a couple of nights.

Not a fan of the B&W, especially when the majority of it is shot in Italy. For those that say it gives it a "noir" ambience... that only applies to movies shot in the past when colour wasn't an option... if they could have shot in colour I'm sure they would have done it!
