oh man, the 9/11 Pearl harbor part was fucking epic!
[8.5/10] I love the structure of this one. Showing us Rick and Morty in media res of their adventure, watching them free themselves from a situation they were trapped into by mind controlling, face-hugging squids guilt free in the first half of the episode, only to flash back and show exactly what led them to that point in the second half, in a way that reframes everything we saw, is near-brilliant.
There’s a certain amount of edgelord humor to it, but that’s not only part and parcel with Rick and Morty’s brand of comedy, but in the second half, the show casts shame on our would-be heroes for their actions on the planet, which helps recontextualize that as the shitty behavior it always was.
I also enjoy the story apart from the non-linear way in which it’s told. Rick and Morty getting taken over by face-huggers who live for thirty minutes and then reproduce by laying eggs via their hosts is a solid sci-fi premise. Summer taking over the face-huggers’ society via teaching them that they can live apart from the biological impulses is a good escalation. And the fact that the awakened Rick and Morty undo all of her good work, blindly thinking that the face-huggers are just blankly evil, only to realize the crappiness of their deeds, is a blast and a fun subversion.
Plus there’s all kinds of small bits of comedy that I liked. Rick and Morty’s banter was particularly on point here, with their lines about getting “political” or wanting to be let into one another heads were loose and funny. The same goes for their “guilt free” Star Wars comparisons and the pair giving one another crap for their poor on-the-spot excuses for Summer’s absence. I also love the setup and payoff with Summer’s toothpick saving her from facehuggers, and the intro and tag with Jerry’s beekeeping was hilarious. Hell, I even got a big kick out of the final “egg-laying” scare being a red herring.
Overall, this feels like the show firing on all cylinders again, telling an out there but comprehensible sci-fi story, doing so in an interesting way structurally, and jam packing the episode with its particular brand of bizarre comedy. Glad to see it.
I think this is the first episode where the high concept just didn't feel original or interesting. There have been boring episodes before (season 4 has been pretty weak so far), but this one just feels so skippable. Some nice jokes, but otherwise pretty flat.
Someone please call Rick to erase the image of them making out from my memory
ask the Saudis DAMNNN, KILLED IT!
A big fat meh, maybe the most forgettable episode of the entire show. I seriously just watched it a week or two ago and cannot tell you a single joke or line of dialogue. Horribly boring and one of Summer's worst outings on the show. Not good.

I'm not sure if I've just simply outgrown this show or if this last couple of episodes are actually this weak... I really can't get into them
