As somebody who loves Chinese mythology and settings, "Doof Dynasty" was immediately gonna appeal to me. It's gorgeous background artwork that is inspired by ancient Oriental paintings is nothing short of marvelous, and it's rejection of the formula while also sticking the basic elements that make the show work allows us to quickly understand the stakes without having to worry about setup.
It also takes advantage of it's nature as an AU story, changing the personalities of the cast ever so slightly to match their new personas and the time period which makes it come alive. Sure, these stories are very clearly an alternate universe take, but it's this flexibility that allows the show to really begin to branch out.
